Morning fellow AM owners.

I was under the impression that premium audio only had rear speakers ?

"my" car has rear speaker grilles at the very least, but I couldn't adjust the fade on the audio settings at all.

Has the car had a semi upgrade ?

The audio actually sounds pretty decent for the 160 watt model , and I am a bit of a purist. Probably the build of the car helping that out though.

Thanks

The standard audio still has the rear speaker grilles, but the set-up only features the two door speakers plus a sub-woofer under the rear shelf. The Premium features an uprated sub-woofer, two rear speakers, a centre speaker and new more powerful anplifier, which also has surround sound and additional control features (equaliser, fade, subwoofer control, surround level etc). But as you say if you play with the standard system it can make some nice sounds smile

Back in the late 90's/2000's we used to make some pretty awesome car hifi.
The rules for a great sound were simple, it had to sound realistic. So the question is, when did you last to to a concert and hear the band from behind?
So all judging in competition is based on a realistic sound stage and imaging.
The Dolby system uses rear speakers only for ambience and rear fill to enhance the soundstage. It does not give any real audio information during normal listening.
So in a normal ( four channel) system, rear speakers are not desirable. (Only for rear passengers). In a Dolby system, they provide ambience and surround (action behind you) sound only.
Basically, they do very little and we like it like that.
The three main speakers across the dash and the sub give us music.
I setup a spectrum analyser in a premium audio V8V some time ago and did an active eq setup. The same as we did in IASCA back in the day. The results were pretty much as I expected and the eq settings to correct many if the issues were a compromise.
Essentially there is a big hole in the mid bass because the driver is only 4".
Not that it sounds st, it's just to a guy who had his car at Earls Court because he had the "most accurate car hifi in the UK" is a bit fussy.
I've been looking into ways to improve this as much as possible using just speakers in OEM locations. I'll update in the future.

I found the same in my 2006 car. The standard audio is perfectly adequate for my occasional listening. Im all for having a nice sounding stereo, but a car is just about the worst environment to try and do so. Hence the stereo or navigation isn't high on my list when choosing something for driving enjoyment smile

I have a £20k audio system in the house setup with spectrum analyser and its pretty good. In the car I have fuse 22 removed to hear the engine more and would just have to turn up one noise to overcome another smile
