Who is number one this week?

Part of the reason for that is surely there is SO MUCH music around?
You can now access everything from hip-hop to folk, to drum and bass, to bollywood, all from any phone, computer or whatever. People will go and listen to the music they enjoy, rather than listening to the radio and whatever is forced down their necks.

I was going to say this, if you look at the charts from some years go there was an awful lot more variety, now you get Pop which is normally a mix of rap/r and b, and your normal bubblegum stuff, you get a bit of variety from the artic monkeys, but that's because they managed to sneak in through the indie phase. You can now access everything from hip-hop to folk, to drum and bass, to bollywood, all from any phone, computer or whatever. I would be very surprised if my dad liked any music his dad liked when he was 20 in the 1930s.
Likewise the teenagers of today are going to find it very difficult to shock their parents who listened to the Prodigy or Napalm Death.... except with their poor taste.
The youth appear to like Status Quo as cheese music at the moment.....

Music at the moment is in the most vibrant and exciting time in it's history, you just have to look a little more carefully to see it. The charts per say are no longer important, even some of the more specialist ones. Beatport chart used to be pretty big, but there are so many sub-genres within the electronic music scene that even that is losing its importance.
