Bit of a boring thread but does anyone have one that does anywhere near its official mpg?

I have a recent Astra and it's done 47mpg over 8,000 miles.

It is very rare that I see over 50mpg and I've never seen anywhere near 60 (official combined figure is 61).

I tend to drive fairly economically but don't slipstream trucks or anything like that.

I was getting over 35mpg doing the same journeys in my TT (official combined 35), probably with more overtakes and bursts of acceleration!

So, are there any cars that will actually do a genuine, day in day out, 60mpg without resorting to 55mph on the motorway? It seems most will do 45-50 but very few get above that.

The diesel Astra is being replaced with a petrol one in April so I wonder how that will fare...

Do you drive at 39mph?

That is what the extra urban is showing, and therefore what the combined is worked out from.

I can get nearly all modern diesels to get the official figures if I follow the test, but I don't so I can't.

2006 Civic 2.2CTDI is easy to get to the claimed 55mpg combined. I've even seen 70mpg on a 20mile journey.
But my 2013 SLK 25CDI, which also has a claimed 55mpg combined, struggles to get over 50.

I understand the test is unrealistic (extra urban goes up to about 80mph by the way) but on a reasonably long journey sticking to speed limits and overtaking people who don't my TT will hit its combined figure easily.

What do you get out of yours?

Ours was doing a calculated 57mpg in summer, now it's dropped to 53ish... That's shortish journeys

Which should tell you that the Audi was less suited to the NEDC tests, and that Audi were less concerned with the results than Vauxhall were with your diesel.

The NEDC also only just touches on the max speed, the average is much lower.

Yes, the test does go up to 80mph, but only for a very short time period - the average speed through the extra urban cycle is only approx 40mph though.

It's also conducted in a temperature controlled lab at between 20 & 30 degrees C, with the soaked at that temperature for a minimum of 6 hours before the test, leading to much shorter warm up periods, and that's before you add in all of the other unrealistic factors.

So unless your 8,000 miles has only been under all of these conditions, forget get manufacturer's figures.

And it's not all down to the naughty manufacturers, blame lies firmly with the EU, who set the parameters for the NEDC.

56mpg over 4k miles for me. a steady 45 seems to give over 70mpg.

official figures are 63-74

'Real MPG' figures are 55, so I seem to be getting pretty much what everyone else does for my car.

Who me ?

Skoda 1.4 tdi .Honest John mentions about 55-58 .Best I've seen on the trip computer is 51, but I've never checked over a long trip. Possibly gettable if I drive like the OAP ,I'm supposed to be, but like most PH I get bored on slow trips.

The dash is usually on high 40s round town. Low 50s on the motorway. If I sit with the lorries in lane 1 high 50s is poss. Not sure what I'm getting that a 2.0 tdi wouldn't do tbh?

2013 E220.

Anything from 36 mpg in constant, slow but never quite stopped traffic, 45 mpg on a clear run around town or on the commute (London at night, some traffic lights) and mid to high 50s on a gentle motorway run.

Combined 56 mpg on the cycle, lifetime 48 mpg (calculated).

There would be something fundamentally wrong with my driving if I found I ever got anything near 40 mpg.

They're cars, drive the arse off them.

BMW 330d.

Can get it down to 16mpg on a good ol' Central London jam up.

Have even managed better at 24mpg on the Nurburgring.

2007 330d (auto, because I'm pretty sure that affects it). 38.7mpg

16-18k a year, 95% motorway miles, almost all of which are at 70mph with cruise control on. Makes me wonder how other 330d owners get 45mpg+.

Before I had it remapped and the DPF removed, I couldn't get it over 36mpg.

It goes to 120kmph, so 70mph and then down to 33mph for 7km so an average of 39mph.

I always look at the us site for figures, usually pretty bang on for city and highway, far better way of calculating it than ours.

You can get 60mpg if you drive on the flat at a constant 50mph. 38mpg at 70mph is pretty bad, you should get well over 40mpg.

Nope, had one. Claimed is 65, even on a run would see 48mpg.

Now have a 2.0 TDI FR, and get an easy 58mpg against a claimed 60 and saw an indicated 72 on a 20 mile B road run. The 1.6 is a great engine but it has to work hard in what is a ridiculously heavy car, whereas the 2.0 just breezes along (and has a 6th gear).

Time to upgrade to the 2.0 FR.
