I bought my car on 30th November 2013.

At the time, the car had a private registration number plate on it, but I was told it would be re-transferred back to the old owner and my car would revert back to its original number plate.

Well, I had to insure the car on the private number it came with as the old one was not on the DVLA database any more and same with the tracking company (who also use VIN number too I think).

Well, fast forward nearly 8 weeks and I still have no sign of my log book. The private reg on my car has been taken off the DVLA website and both my insurance company and tracker company tell me the car is no longer registered, have I sold it etc? I have told them it is in the middle of a transfer but can I still drive the car?

They were not too sure on how to respond to me but I told them, I have insurance documents etc and when the log book comes through I will re-register to the correct plate but only when it comes through.

Now, can I point the finger of blame at the dealer or is someone else culpable? When I took delivery of the car I was assured that it would take 4 weeks and everything would be done before Christmas. Almost one month later....nothing has been done.

If it is the problem of the dealer; where do I stand? Can I take it up with BMW HQ for incompetance or have a go at the dealership and ask for some sort of concession like my money back on the VED and that it is coming out of their pocket?

Arggggggghhhhhhhhhh

Your dealer should have had this sorted within 2 weeks, who are you dealing with?.
Listers are going to do a double transfer for me, retaining my private plate and putting a new private plate on in one transaction.
This they say will take about two weeks.
Phone the DVLA on this number: 03007906802

I'm not sure if I'm allowed to 'name and shame' but I'm dealing with Sytner in Leicestershire.

I don't want to sound like a moany pr*ck but I really did expect top service as I paid top money for my car.

I have transferred my plate several times and it can take time. My last change seemed to drag on for a while and I didn't have the Christmas break to contend with.

Keep chasing the dealer every day until it gets sorted.

We recently had to wait a month to collect a used car while we waited for a personal plate to be taken off by the DVLA. It was quite annoying, although we did negotiate a bit of extra money off the car as a result of the inconvenience it caused us, as the situation wasn't explained fully by the dealer when we paid the deposit.

Personally, I'd now not consider any used car that was either on a personal plate, or where the dealer didn't have the logbook on site.

This DVLA thing is getting stupid regarding plate transfers.

They have just cocked up one on my wifes Range Rover, denied having had the docs ever, when I proved they had received them, no apology or anything, we must have lost them, best part of three months from start to finish.

Friend runs a small indi, currently has £200K s worth of cars sat which he hasnt been paid for (rightfully so), going through plate transfers which are taking an age

It's especially annoying as the DVLA makes a shedload of money from selling plates, but has now massively reduced the support for administering them, pushing increased cost onto dealers and inconvenience to plate owners.

I bought a plate off a trader (via ebay) 2 wks ago. 10 days ago I sent the form off to put the private reg plate onto my vehicle + also paid £25 for something to do with nominee? Received the V5 with new reg number through the post today. Am i right in thinking they should of sent the tax disc with the V5??

Should be quicker. DVLA have put number plate retention online so you can self service, it instantly updates the DVLA records. You get the replacement number, the V948 certificate to get the replacement plates made up and the retention certificate ID so you can assign your number to your new car immediately.

https://www.gov.uk/keep-registration-number

The assign service is currently running as a private beta and will be opened to the public once the purdah regulations are lifted after the general election.
