Could do with a bit of real life experience of what to expect post-op with this.........I had every symptom going indicating I may have prostate cancer, so obviously relieved to be told that it's only enlarged!
I've been on tablets since October, but they've made no difference to the symptoms, and I went in for a cystoscopy a fortnight ago, the result being that the middle lobe is enlarged, requiring surgery. Apparently, tablets have the least effect if this is the part of the prostate that is the issue.
I've been told I'll be in hospital for 3 days, followed by 3 weeks off work.........I'm just wondering if the recovery period really is as long as that, or whether people who've experienced this procedure found themselves recovering more quickly than that?

I had a similar op on my water works although not prostate. You will wake up with a catheter in place, which is normally removed in about 24 hours. You will be passing blood for some time. You will need to drink plenty of fluids. You will find the colour of your urine gradually goes back to normal over a period of days.
You will just feel delicate for a few days and need the loo regularly because of the amount of fluid you are drinking.
Sorry I can't remember much else. Perhaps someone who has had the actual prostate op will chime in.

I take it you realise that is examination of the 'bladder', not the prostate?
They may be very close to each other and interlinked, but the bladder is not the prostate!

how does a cystoscope access the bladder ?
what dfoes it pass on the way ?
I've just undergone a TRUS biopsy on Thursday ( for an enlarged prostate and high PSA reading ).
I also had a catheter on Thursday ( for a further issue ) which was removed before I left hospital.
I'm on pain killers, it's swollen and very sore down there, feeling quite delicate, drinking lots of water and peeing continuously. A lot of blood in the urine still yesterday and today , especially the first few of the day.
Feel quite light headed and sickly at times, but definitely less pain than yesterday.
Results in 9 more days so will be keeping an eye on this thread.......

It's no big deal. Mine - almost three years ago - was done under a local, spinal, anaesthetic which meant no after nasty effects. They started trying to use a green laser on mine, but had to convert to TURP (trans-urethral resection of the prostate). There was too much blood to see for the laser. I was tubed up at first and had a very good night's sleep, courtesy of earplugs, because for the first time in quite a while I didn't have to get up to pee a half dozen times! Nothing hurts except if you step on your catheter tube when you get out of bed
so be careful. Keep an eye on urine output during the first few hours because a clot can block the inboard end and cause a back-up of urine. You'll be being flushed through with saline for a while anyway. Once the blood output into the bag reduces they'll try you without a catheter and if you can pee properly you may be allowed home. You must not drive for, I think, a month although I don't really know why. When you get home you'll find blood weeping out for a day or so, then the only blood will be in your urine and that will reduce and reduce until you're back to normal.
Ever since my life has been immeasurably improved by not having to pee every hour or so and being able to drive for a couple of hours early in the morning without worrying about where to stop next. I still get up once or twice a night but that's a lot better than it was pre-op. It may grow back, I gather, but not for a few years. I'd have it again without hesitation. Good Luck!
ETA you should Google retrograde ejaculation... It's an inevitable after-effect.

You'll be fine
Why not ask to chat to the clinical nurse specialist for urology and talk it through with them?
It is a very common procedure and has a good success rate.
(I'm a urologist's PA currently and I see hundreds of people a week come through the doors who have already had one, or will be having one. For some reason 99.9% of the men are utterly charming. I think it makes you a nice person
)
Some men will need some continence help, some wont. Some will have performance issues, some wont (and there is a fantastic array of help for that too). If you get problems, there will be someone who can help and a clinic to sort them out.
Enjoy your peeing free nights.

What are you having, a TURP?Fort Jefferson said:

Excuse my ignorance, but that isn't an acronym I'm familiar with.....doesn't mean I'm not having it, just haven't heard the term! As I understand it, the surgery involves accessing the prostate through the penis, and removing some of the middle lobe. I was told I'd receive a general, that I'd be kept in for 3 days, and would need 3 weeks recovery time? Thanks for all the replies, I'm not too worried about the procedure itself ( although I can think of many more pleasant ways to spend a weekend! ), I was just surprised at the stated recovery time, and now rather alarmed to learn about the "not driving for a month" part of the deal. First I've heard about that.

I had a TURP a few years ago, and can now pee like a 16 year old, I'm 58. Best thing I ever did.
I'm 48, I can pinpoint the start of this to a stag night 3 years ago.....I was in Dublin for 48 hours, I slept for 14 of them, and had a pint an hour for the rest of it. I've never been right since! I had every symptom of having prostate cancer, so " only " having an op to relieve enlargement is a bit of a relief!Ok, bit more info....it will be a TURP, I'm in on the 28th Feb for it, they reckon for 3 nights probably.
I'm " supposed " to be taking my Evo on our annual 3 day lap of Scotland, with a bunch of other likeminded numpties, starting on the 27th March. The accommodation was something I'd already paid for a while back. The driving, going from previous experience, will be " spirited "! Going by what's been said on here, am I right in thinking I can probably forget about that, under the circumstances?

Well, I had my op ( TURP ) on Friday morning, and was allowed to go home early Sunday evening. The hospital and staff were excellent and informative, but I'm interested in the opinions of the others who've already had, and recovered from, the op.
How long did the discomfort last? I still feel like I've been lying face down, naked, in a field of nettles, and then had Phil " the power " Taylor use my foreskin for target practice when I pee.
I can now compete with a racehorse for speed of flow, which is nice, however, the frequency with which I can deliver 300ml or so of the good stuff ( every 10 mins for an hour at one stage today! ) is a rather alarming development, despite the 2-3 litres of water currently being consumed on a daily basis.
Constipation.......I am not generally troubled by this, however I'm aware that the regular and frequent consumption of painkillers may be to blame. I'm considering being pro-active about this, and believe that magnesium hydroxide is the weapon of choice for the committed constipation warrior, did anyone else have this to contend with? Peculiarly, given the vast amount I've eaten since Saturday morning ( which is the last time I had the back door open ), I don't actually feel like I need to go, but given how regularly I usually do have a sit down, this seems all the more odd.
Any answers on any of the above gratefully received, if all this is normal, great, just don't want to assume it is, then end up disappointed, or worse, unexpectedly back in for another dose of penis / catheter interface trauma!
