We've just bought my wife a new sensible car which means I can have (yet another) stupid car (actually I think a Chimaera is a sensible daily proposition)

I'm very DIY with fixing older cars, if I could find a scruffy Chimaera, perhaps needing outriggers, what should I pay?

Clonky bushes, tired leather, shabby wheels, rusty chassis, misfires, knackered cam, anything goes if it cheap, I know, I know, its just how I buy cars.

QBee (I think it was) paid something like £1500 for one if I read that correctly so there are cheap ones. As for what to pay I guess from £1500 upwards?
You are looking at the right time I'd say as mid winter people often just want shot.

Good luck smile

I was trying to work out the logistics of driving it home given I'm in the far east this week, seems like the petrol for 7k miles isn't really that much, but I'm short of time even if I drive 1000 miles a day as I can't leave KL until the 29th and have a party on Isle of Wight on 31st to attend.

If a scruffy Chim can be had for £1500 'ahhhhmmm in'

So, thinking of joining the fold Huntsman? quite right too, can't have too many V8s I always say. Surprised there're no cheap Chims about, there's usually something with a few issues that's going for a song. No doubt something will turn up and I know you're a patient man when it comes to getting the right car at the right price. In the meantime, it's not long until the 50th, any progress?

Sort of..I've finished all the other car projects, so when I get back to UK next Weds I'll be cracking on with some gusto!

PLently of V8 and a pair of big diesels in the boat, can't have too many engines!

Cheap scruffy Chim appeals.

Hmmm… winter on the Trans-Siberian highway, in a Chim… now that would be interesting eek Breakdown, no mobile signal… and how many miles to the nearest phone box!? Unless you have them already, then a Visas would be an obvious issue. If you're serious though, a ferry from Japan to Russia would be the most obvious step, followed by Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania etc. Unless you fancy a more 'varied' welcome... trying to get through South Korea into North Korea and then China… followed by Iran, Turkey, Greece etc laugh It would make a damn good documentary though… I'd like to see Wheeler Dealers try this one smile

Sorry, not me. Mine was 10k. A friend of mine bought a tired one for about three times what you quote, but you rarely see them advertised below 5-6 grand.

I think it might be worth discussing your definition of 'finished' when you're back wink

Bought several 'cheap' Chims last year starting from £1100 (Cat D with indoor swimming pool but sweet engine with tax and MOT).

Keep an eye out, be prepared to travel and act quickly.

Good luck, Paul.

You're in the wrong TVR section Penfold.

Anyway, that was selective quoting, the Morris is finished for now and Stinky2 is finished and ready to sell, Keeble next.

I should think about the £4k mark is about right for something that drives but needs work?

Practical classics values may be taken with a pinch of salt by many, but they reckon £4400 for a Chimaera that is, quote: "CONDITION 3 - cars usually need a complete rebuild, but they might be driveable and MoT’d – candidates for restorations."

Hi, It can be a bit of a lottery, You can get a "cheap" car for 5k and find it needs just a little bit of tlc, then you could buy another for the same price and it requires all that mentioned. Or if you are feeling really brave, buy one that's been written off and save it from certain doom, then you could start from scratch.
Anyway welcome the fold and look forward to reading the very long post of your progress.
