Well first of all, i thank you for looking at this post, i am in need of some help.

Ive just had a crash last Thursday and since then my insurance has been voided. i paid in excess of £2600 for the TPFT from tesco and when i told them about the crash they voided my insurance even though it wasnt my fault and no one was claiming against me.

They told em that they were voiding the policy as the policy read that the car was registered in my name, in which it should have but it was actually insured in my dads name as he brought it me and we forgot to change it over. They told me that i should have told them as they wouldnt have insured me if i had told them that my dad was the owner, yet i am the only person on the policy and tried to explain that i would send off to ammend the policy and change it into my name.

the policy was 10 months into it and it was my first year. i cannot get insured anywhere now so its pretty much paying £2600 to not drive for x ammount of years.

thanks for any help.

So the car (your car) you crashed was registered to your Dad?

I'm sure in the small print (possibly the big print too) it states the insured vehicle must be registered to the main driver, if so there's little you can do, especially after 10 months.

So, you got insurance under your dads name and then crashed the car....

He hasn't been fronting, read it again! He said he is the only person insured on it (not fronting) but his dad is the registered keeper (presumably on the V5c) but he told the insurance company that he is listed as the registered keeper.

Who is the owner of the car? You say your dad bought it, was it a gift to you or did you pay him back for it? Or are you using it as though you are borrowing his car (even though you said he doesn't use it)?

Isn't fronting the other way round?

In this case the high risk son has insured the low risk dads car which is an obvious mistake shurely confused

How can you be the only person on the policy if the policy is in your dads name? do you mean the v5 is in your dads name?

As said above, unfortunately you have no comeback on this. They have a right to void it, as they would if you was living at a different address stated on the policy, or any modifications undeclared.

If I've read correctly, you haven't even been fronting, you've just plain not been insured. That carries a maximum fine of £5000.

Count yourself lucky. If you had injured someone or caused major damage, you'd be liable for the whole lot.

the policy was in my name, my dad brought me the car for my 18th. all that was wrong is that we forgot to change the log book over to my name. i was the only person able to drive the car hence why the price was rather high. I tried to explain that i would send it off the next day, as i did but they had none of it

Basically you've 'only' lost 2 months of insurance? Count yourself lucky on that one - would have been a lot worse if police were involved with your accident!

and i dont see how this affect the policy in any way, you can change your address on the policy so why couldnt i just send the log book off and then submit the proof when it was back, it wasnt like it was intentional or anything just an honest mistake, ive said ide be the only driver and i paid the lump sum up front

OK, this is quite different to how your original post makes it sound.

It's important to note that the registered keeper on the V5C is NOT necessarily the legal owner. We have plenty of insurance insiders to explain the process behind this one, but if the only discrepancy on the policy is that the car was registered in the wrong name (but still at the correct address), their attempt to void your policy seems somewhat more dubious.

Perhaps you should get an online insurance quote with this provider, with all details exactly as on your policy, but one with you as the registered keeper and one with you not the registered keeper. If there's little/no difference, then I don't think they have reasonable grounds to void your policy.

Please clarify this bit.

To whom was it registered on the V5?
Who was the Policyholder for the insurance?
Were you mentioned at all on the Insurance Policy?

(And please learn the difference between the verbs 'to bring' and 'to buy'...)

If it's as you say it seems pretty harsh for them to void the policy.

I'd be getting in touch with the insurance ombudsman and seeing if there's anything they can do for you.

How did they find out the car was registered to your Dad and not to yourself?

yes this is what it was i rang them up when i did it and this was with everyhing in my name, my dad had the v5 in his name which we forgot about due to reasons such as several deaths and him having 2 heart attacks, just forgot about it

Something doesn't add up, we are either missing information or have been told something wrong....

An Insurance company wouldn't void your policy for having just the car in your dads name.

I work in that industry (within claims) , with respect, I dont think you have quite got the facts right.
