Chap nudged my car in a car park at the weekend. Minor scrape with a little paint removed on the leading edge of the bonnet and a scrape on the grille.

Very apologetic, we exchanged details with a view to getting a chips away smart style repair and avoiding insurance excesses and the like.

I was assuming circa £100. Quote is £320. Am I being totally unrealistic or is this the going rate?

£320 is the price I'd expect from a top of the range bodyshop.

I had a quote on a Mondeo for having a dent on a door pulled and buffed four years ago and it was £130.

Never had it done as I thought that was too much.

I'm guessing if it looks as good as before and the fact that it looks more of a difficult job on your TVR that it might not be far off the going rate.

As mentioned above try a decent body shop.

As others have said. Body shop all day long.

Never really had any paint done before so I don't know. I appreciate it's a time consuming and skilled task. I just thought it was a bit rich for a smart repair. Thought £320 would get me the service bonnet and cheese grater painted completely to be honest.

Possible he saw a lean TVR and thought he'd try it on

there will be a decent margin in it. Tell them that your excess is less than that and see if they come down any.

Agreed.

Go to a body shop or two and get quotes for comparison.

I'd tout it around a few places and let them eye-ball the damage. These things always seem to cost more than you'd think.

I'm interested to know how thinks he's going to lose the edge of the new lacquer on the bonnet.
Bonnets usually require a full panel spray or the lacquer edge will be visible. Once you've noticed it it will irritate you! The exception would be where the bonnet has clear swage lines that can be used to hide the edge.

A main dealer quoted me £400 to paint the whole side of my car after it was keyed, and I only paid £180 at another bodyshop. £320 is ridiculous!

That's very cheap. £180 wouldn't even cover the cost of the paint and materials for me to paint the whole side of a car!

As for the TVR, I'd quote about £250 to paint the whole bonnet and the grille. It is a big bonnet!

It's in two parts. Smaller service bonnet at the front.

Thanks for all the comments. Just popped in to the body shop in town, £280 plus VAT to paint service bonnet and cheese grater. Looks like a proper body shop is the way to go. I'll try Sportmotive, they're just up the road. They specialise in TVR and have a good reputation for paint.

I wouldn't have been too fussed but it's otherwise perfect, not so much as a stone chip.

It was only a small car, a Yaris. I got it done at the local coachworks, cash in hand because I knew the owner. They did a fantastic job too.

Chips Away followed up after I queried the quote. Price is to repair, blend damaged area and lacquer the whole panel

I have a chipsaway franchise and I would charge you around £300 + vat to repair that in my workshop in the spraybooth and as said would blend the colour and clear the whole panel.

Im guessing its Carl in Stafford that you had do the quote and he wouldnt have added TVR tax.

Seems to be that's what's required for a proper job and to be fair, that's exactly what Chips Away recommended and quoted for.

I guess I had visions of a chap turning up, putting up his tent and working his magic for £100.

You live and learn. Once again thanks for all the help and advice thumbup
