I'm debating whether to take out the protected NCB add on to my insurance however there are a couple of things that bother me. My Insurance company say that if I have an accident/Claim and then when I renew my policy I decide to change my insurer they will give me a letter saying that I still have 9+ years NCB. However when you take out a new policy they ask you directly if you have had an accident or made a claim in the last 5 years.

My point is.... Are you judged on the fact you 'have' made a claim, or is that waived completely and the full NCB given by the new insurance company?

Seems pointless taking out protected NCB if they still assess you on your previous

Having made a claim will load your policy, but 9 years NCD takes some of that down. Bottom line: It'll probably be cheaper to protect NCD, but it won't be massive.

The difference between 3 years and 5 years no claims for me is around £18. The protected NCB option is £37 (i think the guaranteed NCB option is even more). I had a fault claim but it only knocked 2 years off my NCB for renewal it didn't wipe it out.

Can't see the point personally. Probably makes more sense if you've got <3 years NCB (since these years have a bigger effect on premium than later NCB years) & your quotes are > ~£1k (reducing the percentage impact of the NCB protection premium).
