Range Rover Sport...Any good?
Discussion
Hi all,
a bit un 'PH' but was wondering if anyone has any experience of the RR sport? Running costs aren't a consideration so which engine would be better diesel or petrol? I'd probably prefer the TD V8 but not sure how it compares to the 4.2s/c and 5.0s/c variants? Any comments good or bad welcome (preferably from personal experience).
Cheers

I had a 55 plate 4.2 S/C for a couple of years & overall really enjoyed it, even though it was a second car. When it was right it was fantastic but never ending suspension issues & a dealer that didn't seem to understand the car didn't help!
Fuel consumption was awful, OBC said 12mpg & I never depressed myself further by working the true figure out.
I sold it around 50k miles & I still have knowledge of the car & it has not been cheap for current owner. Faults have included replacing both radiators, front suspension bits, know that cost over £500, & some electrical issues, ACC & ICE, think that was compounded by the fact it had rear entertainment & iPod compatibility.
As a drive it never ceased to amaze me that it went so well & the sound of the S/C on song was fantastic. Just like a spitfire. (plane not Triumph!)
Don't know if any of that helps, maybe too old to matter to you. On the other hand,, last week I drove a new diesel sport & if it were practical to own I would have my order in by now.

I have a massive amount of want for one of these. I have no logical reason for having one but as soon as I can I'll get one.
It won't be my only car and it will only get limited use so I'm thinking I should get the 4.2 supercharged one. My man maths have calculated that it's the cheapest option for me.

Seriously if costs aren't an issue, why are you considering a diesel one?a bit un 'PH' but was wondering if anyone has any experience of the RR sport? Don't get me wrong, the TDV8 is pretty cool in it's own right, but the petrol V8's, especially the supercharged ones are a heck of a lot more powerful. It's a no brainer if costs aren't an issue.
Any good is hard to answer as it's very personal and clearly a divisive car , but ...
Have a TDV8 RRS and it's the car that I'd rather take most of the time over my M3. No, it's not the fastest car, nor the best handling (even of it's type) but it has something about it that makes it a nice place to be.
It's a very relaxing drive, shrugs off mud, miserable weather, greasy roads and motorways with equal ease. Economy is mid 20s and it gets driven enthusiastically and very rarely sees the motorway. The interior is nicer than a lot of 4x4s, but isn't as special-feeling as the FFRR (but it looks less like a teetering stately home too). Even the diesel V8 sounds pretty good after a minute or two idling.
It probably helps that mine is thick with mud and used reasonably properly, but when it's clean I do sadly feel a little conscious of the image, but it's such a great vehicle I don't really care.
Despite their woeful reputation, my local Stratsones have been faultless to deal with.
Had a good long go in a new RRS, including a few hours round Eastnor and it left me struggling to think of a better all rounder - smooth, comfortable, wieldy (relatively), practical, go-anywhere etc. If they'd put an order form in front of me that day I'd have bought one, but there isn't a lot making me think of replacing mine other than gear lust.
Do get a warranty though

They are good but like all LRs, have silly niggles.
The front lower wishbones need changed every 70-100k, the bushes and ball joints go with age.
ARB bushes and drop links are the same.
Front wheel bearings can go at similar miles.
Check the rear brake lines as on the D3 ( same T5 chassis ) they are steel, and rust. I've already had mine changed on a 54 plate D3.
The autobox should be flushed every 75-100k and the diffs about the same.
Air suspension compressors can go, there is a newer AMK version for D4s and MY10 RRS. When the older one fails, swap to the new one. I will be doing that when mine goes.
Otherwise, buy a clean one, with a good history and find a good Indy to look after it.
They can chew tyres every 10-18k depending on make.

we had a 57 plate one, sold it as soon as the warranty ran out, had 3 sets of anti roll bar bushes on it while we had it, check for a knocking sound on the front end on bumpy road, nice to drive though, we made £1000 on ours and drove it for 20k miles! only car Ive ever made money on!
I'm currently on my third with a new one arriving in April. First was a 4.2 S/C, second and current are 5.0 S/C. Did 90k in my first over 5 years (using a shed load of petrol). Great cars, and the new one is a leap better still - probably the best all rounder on the market at the moment.
Problems? None with either of the 5.0L. A few on the 4.2 - most fixed under warranty. Front diff, oil leak (engine out), active anti roll bar were the main ones (the last at 85k miles so out of warranty, others early on).
