For future reference, a facelift is an update of an existing model, NOT AN ENTIRELY NEW ONE!

A facelift is an update of the exterior only to bring the car up to date half way through it's cycle. The car is still the same underneath.

Even though they are the same model. The Imprezas you posted are not the same generation, therefore not a face lift.

In that case the phase 1 and 1.5 Impreza's are "different models" as they have different chassis numbers and model codes, but only cosmetic changes to bonnet, headlights etc.

That's not entirely correct. The Facelifted Fiesta shown in the OP has new underbody - new engine line up, and some other tweaks.

Facelift = mid-cycle update of an existing tophat.

Happens quite often. New engines get released, they usually tart up the looks to make a show of it.

Regardless of what makes a facelift, it's usually not difficult to tell the difference between one and a new model.

But theyre completely different bodyshells. Do you know what a facelift is? The Classic and New Age Imprezas share a family resemblance, like the Mk1 and Mk2 Golf, but theyre a completely different car.

Had you proposed the Bug to the Blob then you have been correct (whilst being wrong about their aesthetic appeal), because that was a facelift. 1996 C-Series to 1997 D=Series Impreza was a facelift too, although it too looks better.
