No more 'taxed and tested'

Just read in one of the old car mags that with the end of paper tax discs this year drivers will be unable to sell a car as taxed. The tax will not be transferred to the new owner. Strange.
I really hope this isn't the case - How can you buy a car privately then, as once it's yours, it's not taxed so you can't legally drive it? Or do you have to tax it when you pick it up?Apparently this aspect of it is under consultancy.

The reason they wouldn't put it on fuel is that hybrids and electric cars are the future and they'd lose revenue. There would be a major backlash if they increased tax on electricity as it would hit the regular homeowner or oap even if they didn't have a car
There's a very easy solution to that - road charging. kambites said:

Thats really pathetic if it is.
just another way to get more money out of motorist tbh. and a real s
tty way to do it as well.
They recieve no extra income. Just means when you sell a car you get a refund of the tax due to you. If you pay it monthly which is how they want you to then that won't be much of a refund.just another way to get more money out of motorist tbh. and a real s
tty way to do it as well. Then when you buy said car, do the deal with the private seller, phone the DVLA or go on their website (website will be far eaiser) and within 5 - 10 mins it's taxed. You then only pay the tax for your use then if you sell it, you get a refund of any outstanding tax.
I don't see anywhere in here how they get extra revenue? Where is more being paid for the car? Just means the people who pay the tax on it are the ones who own it, can't see it on with 12 months tax. Obviously that is ignoring that they'll probably use the monthly thing to ramp the price up but that is another discussion.
Changing the ability to sell with tax earns them no extra money by itself, whether they raise the tax every year (like they already do...) is another factor. Pop the tinfoil hats off for a moment gents. People get worked up over trivial things like this and ignore larger issues.
It actually works out very very well having this new no tax disc system for anyone who has a car they don't run all year round, one that breaks etc. as you can SORN it within 5 minutes and get the outstanding tax refunded. So actually, they are probably LOSING money with this system because people can refund the tax so easily, instead of maybe having it sitting on their drive for 4 months wasting tax.

True, but the government doesn't really care how big each bite is, as long as the total is right.
Oh they do care , what if all tax was removed , just one single tax, no vat, fuel duty , income tax , NI ?What do you think the population would do it they found over 80% of their income went to the tax man ?
The extra revenue is that when you get a refund it is only for a full month so if you sell a car on 15th June, you only get July on as a refund. However, yur new car will have to be taxed from 1st June so you pay twice for the period 15-30/6 in my example. It's not much, just enough to annoy people.
If they had a daily refund or a system you could transfer unexpired credit to anew car, it wouldn't be an issue.
