Has anyone had the box attached to their car by insurance companies to keep the cost down?

If so what are the like to have, I'm 20 and have had a couple cars without them but I'm looking to change my car to something more practical but currently I have 3 points on my licence and was hit by an idiot who wrote my car off and then drove off !
so insurance has gone up a hell of a lot for me.

I need to know if they are very strict and restricting with your driving if you have the box attached and if it is worth it or not?

My eldest has one. Cheapest quote without GPS-box was £2,100, cheapest quote "with GPS tracker" was £1500.

There are no restrictions on usage, no changes in price "mid-policy". It records things like time of travel, speed, acceleration, and braking and emails her quarterly about how "good" her driving is. I assume the renewal premium will be based in part on her driving habits.

It also acts as an anti-theft tracker. Win-win as far as I can see. biggrin

Just don't do it! Seriously don't.

There have been a few stories regarding these types of boxes however that is as it is with everything.

They measure everything! How fast you are going, how fast you brake, if you done an emergency stop, did you drive at peak time, off peak time, did you miss curfew by 30 minutes.

Its more hassle than its worth and I know i am taking the risk of being flamed down but do you really want to contribute to a society that monitor every single bloody thing you do.

I could get my insurance for 200 pounds cheaper by using the blackbox but there was no way in hell I would have one. I paid 200 extra just not to have it and went with more than insurance.

Two months ago a young man had a box on his car and died in a car crash because he was rushing home to beat the curfew on the "black box" - When my newborn grows up I really really hope there is still an option not to have one!!!

Good luck in whatever choice you make.

As crazy as it sounds I would have tried to pay the 600 extra to not have one or get a car that gave me a quote of 1500 without it. No I am not a director of a company flush with money who drives a Ferrari. Average Joe blogs. I watch my pennies too.

My 18 year old brother pays £2700 a year with one in his car.
No one else would insure him so he had to take it out.
Not renewal time yet so I am unsure if it brings his premium down for the following year, hopefully it will.

With all due respect, that has absolutely nothing to do with the black box and everything to do with the person behind the wheel.
It's like blaming your breakfast for being late to work.

No flaming from me for this - so many of us seem to be sleepwalking towards this continuous monitoring, and if anyone raises a concern we're dismissed as tin-foil hatters or people with "something to hide" - well I have plenty to hide, not because it's illegal but because it's no-one else's damn business.

Here, bloody here.
However I suspect that most people will sell their privacy cheaply, then bh about it later.

+1 What people seem to fail to realise is that the boxes are not for their own good, they are there to enable more
profits for the insurance industry.

The tricky part with his all is though is that yes you can pay the extra £600 but as far as I am concerned I should have to because the reason my insurance has gone up is coz I got driven off the road by som p**ck who then drives off.. And this has left me in a crap situation which I shouldn't be in and just to find options at the moment but think the box is a waste for me

Could you agree to have one of these boxes, then just leave it wired to a battery in the garage?

If it help you out for a couple of years why not? Personally I wouldn't, but I'm 35 so my insurance is cheap anyway.

It's probably going to become the norm for young drivers soon. To be honest if at 17 I was facing 3/4k insurance premiums when I passed, I probably wouldn't have bothered getting my licence.

That's the situation I am in, even though I am 20 and am on my third car I'm still paying £1700 where as most of my mates are just under £1000 so I need to find a cheap way due to lack of money (as most people do). For a temporary time

But also being 20 I tend to be out fairly late at my girlfriends house etc and drive 70 miles a day to work and back so more likely for something to go wrong so not sure if It's worth it as I don't want to feel restricted.

No it will become the norm for everyone as more and more people accept having them.

Even 35 year olds will find that they will have to have one if they want cheap insurance.

The clock it ticking.

I understand what you are saying and when I mentioned the news story it was just an event that had happened in connection with the OP's thread. I only partially agree with your statement as at the end of the end younger drivers as we were all once, tend to panic rather quickly to adverse driving situations and make mistakes in a split second.

In this situation the driver did make a mistake due to in some extend added pressure of the blackbox, you are correct this could have been pressure added in a number of different ways for example your parents being strict and saying make sure your ass is home by ten but in this situation it was due to being fearful of getting in trouble with the insurance company.

There's your proof. Some people are so stupid even a black box can't save them!

How about all the thousands of young drivers that have been killed in recent years who didn't have a black box. Some of them might still be alive if they were being monitored and maybe not driven like idiots.

I've got a telematics box in my car, I just drive the way I drive.

My first quote without a box when I was 17 with my 1.1 was £3600. I didn't have to pay that. -cough-

Didn't get a NCB out of it though. Binned the policy after 10 months and went to insurethebox where I got it down to £1000.

Now into my third year with one year's NCB and it's down to £600.

Getting good bonus miles although they try to show me a red circle for my speed, but fcensoredck them. biggrin

As long as the driving's smooth and all that there can't be much to grumble at, and if they think the vast majority of people drive below 70 on the motorway then well... I guffaw at their inadequate sensibilities.

Hoping I can get an MX5 with a sensible insurance price sometime next year! Leave the piss poor power behind.

Well if that's true it's ticking very slowly. Aviva introduced black box insurance nearly a decade ago. It was a tiny niche market then and it still is now.
