So ive had this game since Christmas but I just dont know what Im supposed to be doing! Ive never played a GTA game before. I just seem to be wandering around aimlessly with nothing happening. Can someone give me some pointers on where to start please? How do I get money and how to talk to people?

It's an open world sandbox, so you can do whatever you want.

However, you will be steered towards missions and such. Have you checked your (in game) phone?

Have a look at the map and head for some of the things that are highlighted the same colour as your character is.

Thanks for the tips. Ive phoned Simeone as per the on screen instructions but it just goes to voicemail which is strange. Ive had a haircut and been to the shooting range but thats about it.

At the beginning of the game you get a constant stream of info and tips guiding you to the next missions. Have you tried following those?
For a start go to the coloured letters on the map identifying your contacts who will give you missions. Dont worry about money early on you will accumulate that. Just dont do the Lester Assasination missions till the end of the game.

There is a massive story to the game and you have to meet the characters for the game to progress and activities to unlock. Dont waste your money on haircuts and clothes you will want it for guns and cars.

You are missing a major brilliant part of the game by not completing as much of the single player as you can.
Especially these days, as it is soo difficult to build up money in the multiplayer.

I agree that you should play through the single player as it really gives you a chance to explore and get to know the map, BUT please do not be put off online, all this talk about being 'so difficult to build up money' is totally wrong, it's less than 2 weeks since the money was reset and I have earnt well over $700,000 which has included restocking all my ammo for each and every mission. Online that would buy you a good apartment and a few very good cars.

I gave up on multiplayer due to knobheads constantly harassing me when I was trying to do missions etc.

The burden of choice - there's so much to do in GTA5, it's a little tricky to know where to start!

Sounds to me like you should be trading it in for something else.
