Father in law has just bought a 2003 Cooper and wants to remove the rev counter as he finds it distracting. His question is whether this will create any fault codes or problems? He believes the seat belt warning light is also part of the rev counter?

Any advice would be appreciated

Thank you

Simon

Hi

I would not worry about the MOT side. When we specced our 2002 Mini ONE, we did not want the additional rev counter as we thought it spoilt the line of the dash. Also thought it looked a little plasticky.....(I look back now and don't know why.....)

So the car can operate with the required warning lights with the dash speedo only. How to do it though, I have not got a clue. I know the R56 is quite easy to remove with a single connector. There must be an on line guide on youtube somewhere....

Also, on my 2006 mk1 cooper, rev counter contains a speedo, the only one worth looking at in the mini, computer readout, and various warning lights. Not a clever thing to remove.

Slightly different speccing a car from new to be without a rev counter, than removing one and all it's warning lights post build.

Two pics that will show what warning lights are in which area, and what ones will be hard to be without for mot etc, plus General use

If he finds a rev counter distracting, perhaps he should stop driving.

Rigga - that's the clocks from the later facelift. The 03 Cooper has different clocks.

Oops your right .... eek

(Off to trawl the net for the right picture)

Not as good but how's this one

No that's a st pic and can't find a similar one for the r53 compares to the r56 ones I posted earlier which show clearly what's where, but although the clocks are different I think the warning symbols are pretty similar in layout ...any r53 owner's wish to confirm or deny?

I know little about the r56 and jack all about the r53.

From memory the lights are for cruise control, traction control and seatbelt warning (may be one more I've missed).

As for removing the rev counter, it's two torx screws behind the unit, pull it up and disconnect the plug. Not sure whether the car will throw a wobbly because it's disconnected however!

Hope this helps smile

Won't he just get used to it over time? Just like getting used to the speedo being in the middle of the dash?
