Discussion
Just thought I would share my new purchase with you.

2001 M5. I have not seen the car in the flesh yet as I'm currently offshore. But I used to drive past this dealer on my way to work. They always had some nice looking cars in stock. But at the time I couldn't afford anything they sold. Fast forward a couple of years and found this M5 whislt browsing! It was the combination I had been looking for. Black on black facelift model! So thought "feck it" Phoned the dealer and with some reassurance regarding condition and history I've paced a deposit on the car. Shouldbe home on Thursday. So will hopefully pick up Friday.
Currently drive a really nice unmolested E46 330Ci Sport. So really excited about driving a proper brute of an M car.
Just thought I'd share.
Stevie.

Thanks. I'm not shy at spending money on my BMW's. I completely understand that this is a £60k plus car with running costs associated with that. I was going to buy an E60 M5 but they just don't float my boat? Insurance was a shock !!! £309 fully comp! Jeezo! That's good. I'm expecting 13- 25mpg max. Super Unleaded of course.
All very positive regarding car and general M5 ownership. I've owned a couple of M3's in the past, E36 Evo Saloon and a really nice E30 Evo 2 249/501. Sold that for a song? That was back in the days when they weren't worth a small ransom! Hindsight? So I'm under no illusion that it will be cheap to run. I ran an E38 750iL for 4 years (M7 GSV) averaged 14.7mpg over 4 years. Eek. that was mostly town driving.
Congrats!
You should be fine. I have bought a couple of cars from dealers on a similar premise of phone discussion plus deposit...and then the balance on collection and confirmation.
You can usually tell from the rapport/interaction on the phone if you feel you can trust the dealer (of course not completely fool proof).
This included a E30 M3 Evo 2 - mine was 259/500 - and a 996 RS
The E39 M5 is a lovely car. I've had mine for over 7 years and it has surprisingly been relatively cheap to run. Mine gets all the attention it needs in terms of servicing etc...but has been very reliable. I did have an electric gremlin a few months ago but managed to self-diagnose (via laptop/cable) to a shorted xenon alignment module. A recent major service with new plugs has made the engine noticeably smoother.
I sometime think about replacing with a E46 CS/CSL....but then I know I will regret not having that low down torque'd engine with a manual gearbox...
..oh, and its has a Tubi Exhaust....immense!
Enjoy your steed.

Thank you for the feedback LaSource. That is a beautiful looking M5 you have there. I know the dealer fairly well and know quite a few people who have bought cars from them, all have good things to say with regards to the quality of the cars sold and the after sales service. I tried to haggle the price over the phone but got nowhere! Making think this was a good quality M5. The salesman was really good, talking me through the whole car over the phone.
Warranty wise? I think you are probably right andymc but the car is 13 years old and so to get a good gold standard warranty may be economically unviable? So I'll just gamble on the warranty they offer. Besides, I was going to buy private in which a warranty may not have been an option. I am very aware that I am buying a 90k M5 and not a new VW Golf. So expenditure on my newly aquired toy will be very much expected!! But that's ok.
I'm now desperate to depart this steel structure in the sea and pick up my M5?? Not sure if I can leave early??

Stunning example! Nice to see the Heritage seats in black in such good condition (they seem to wear more easily than the Sports ("austrich") seats) and makes me regret ever selling mine - the best allrounder I have ever had, and even with a decent fuel range for a 5 litre V8 (regularly got 520+ km out of a tank at autobahn speed, whereas the E60 M5 would struggle to get 400 km on a tank).
Enjoy!
Enjoy!
