I've a rattle from inside the tank, sounds metallic like thin metal is loose or nuts in the bottom. Anything like that in there? I've never looked inside one so have no idea what wonders they hold, three quarters of a tank left of fuel at the moment so can't investigate much further for a couple of days.

I would guess the fuel pump has come loose. I know it isn't in the tank but it seems too much of a coincidence that the noise appears when the pump primes.

Fuel pump on Chim is external around nearside rear wheel.

You have what sounds like a broken baffle - Chim/Griff tank have internal baffles to stop sloshing!!

My Chim's baffles let-go in 2005, sold it with the same rattle last year - New tank/replacement (not cheap), would be a PITA to remove/replace??

Keep the tank more than half full and you don't usually hear it too much??

Otherwise, start searching............ rolleyes

I was thinking along the lines of it being the return into the tank spraying onto something, it sounded too high to be coming from underneath the car. Will give it a wiggle though, should have been one of the first things that I checked but I'm all clean, it's wet outside and I'm a tart hehe

Cool, baffles make sense. Did you have any problems with fuel surge with a broken one?

Nope - started Sprint/Hillclimbing in 2007 and used it in TVR Speed Champs as I say until I sold it in 2013 without doing anything about it!!

New owner heard it and rolled his eyes too - usually when topped up you don't notice? It may jam itself and you'll not hear it again?

the baffles came loose in mine, I was going to leave it as I didn't hear it very often, I had to change mine in the end because where the baffle was spot welded onto the tank,it split round the spot weld, it was hidden behind one of the tank straps & I only found it one day when I filled the tank up one day & the petrol left a stain on the tank from behind the strap. second hand ones do come up, you need to know which type you have as the senders changed on the tank from early to late gauges. I got mine from bell hill breakers.

Ta people thumbup

Today was the first time that I heard it and I have a boot full of crap at the moment, you've all solved the mystery without me having to empty the boot and tank. I'll go and have a sniff and poke around later to make sure it isn't leaking, but I think that it's just going to be one of those things that stays there and is a happy eccentricity that non TVR people don't get.

A decent engineers shop will be able to cut it open and weld it back in to place and weld up the tank of course.
