Such a small engine in such a big/heavy car?
No thanks.
Why not?No thanks.
A hundred and more years ago I seem to recall wooden framed motorbikes had stuff like 3500cc engines that developed 2hp and did about 10mph.
As time has gone on we get more power from smaller engines. Progress - better designs, better tolerances, better metallurgy.

Cars also have more tat, less quality and free ugliness thrown in.A hundred and more years ago I seem to recall wooden framed motorbikes had stuff like 3500cc engines that developed 2hp and did about 10mph.

Im holding out for the 718d
To be fair to BMW their hands are tied on emissions and I bet that goes no worse than a 728 of yesteryear (even if it is 2cyls short).
Indeed, E38 728 only had the same 193 bhp as per the 328i and 528i.

Someone on here has one, different gearing iirc. Does 70mph at around 2k revs?

The Diesel engine in the 7 is agricultural and unsuited to it
It's far from agricultural, I'm assuming you are referring to the 3.0d? It's a superb engine.Of course I understand the tax and economy reasons as to why the 730d exists, but let's not fool ourselves that it's a remotely refined engine!

I am indeed, I travel in one regularly. Get in and start up a new 7 and drive off, then get in bog standard e38 728 start up and drive off. We have regressed in terms of refinement and smoothness by a significant amount I'm afraid.

It by far the most refined Diesel engine I've ever driven and I've driven a fair few, excellent engine.Of course I understand the tax and economy reasons as to why the 730d exists, but let's not fool ourselves that it's a remotely refined engine!
