Hi all,

Is there any way to legally insure a car in UK and run it on UK plates when not residing in UK?

The reason I'm asking is following: as you probably know, most countries in continental Europe are basically forbidding any serious modifications on cars, whereas from what I know, pretty much anything goes in UK. For this reason, I'd be very interested to know if there is a way to run a UK plated car while residing in another country.

Many thanks in advance for your input.

BTW I've seen rally cars with UK plates here in Switzerland, although not recently.

Cheers,

david

Run it on Polish plates, Insurers here really don't seem to care about much and the vehicle is insured as opposed to the driver,

Wow, cheers for that!

This might be what I'm looking for! Question is, do I need a UK address?

will cost you nearly twice best price in uk, but as you're used to ch insurance that won't be a big shock. underwritten by axa btw.

I do not know about the rest of the EU ( but it surely is similar) but in France a lot of the expats run UK plated cars. For insurance you will need a UK address. AS long as you keep your UK license there is no problem. IF you switch licenses to a local one it is illegal to run UK plate on your car.

if op is in ch he's probably swapped licences, as it's v risky in that country not to if yr resident. so yes, he can't run the uk car in ch on a ch licence.
he can enjoy it anywhere else in eu though. Technically the expats in france shouldn't be running uk plates after 6 mths either, but the risk there is minimal.

I've run a UK registered car in Sweden, and I hold a Finnish licence. All perfectly legal here.
