Hospital walk in clinics

How do the walk in clinics in hospitals work, is it as simple as it sounds and I just walk in and see someone, (after a long wait no doubt)?
I'm away from home and I've seriously buggered up my back to the point where it's very difficult to stand and walk. I need painkillers at the least and for a Dr to look at it, but I'm not going to go to A&E as it's neither an accident or an emergency. It is however agony and needs sorting.
There are a couple of hospitals near me that do walk ins though.

Yup, I have not visited my actual doctors surgery in many years to be honest. The surgery is only open whilst i'm working so I just go to the walk-in centre if I have any major complaints now.

Walk in Centres ( reghardless of standalone, in a normal GP surgey or attached to a Hospital Emergency dept / Minor injuries service) are there to provide just the kind of service the OP needs.

A pharmacist may be a quicker route to pain relief however. Additionally, you can also register as a temp patient at another GP if away from home. Good luck!
