Hi All

A mate of mine is looking at doing a full resto on a 400se and would like something other than the 15" OZ split rims.

He is actually after something similar to the BBS splits Blaine fitted to that masterpiece he created. Blaine has kindly confirmed that they were 16"x9" rims.

I know the offset for a 350i is ET23 and the hole centres are 5x112.

Can some one please confirm the offset for the big Wedges is the same or not?

Next question. Once I have this information are there any companies out there producing this type of rim in our offset?

Cheers Karl..

Offsets on the OZ split rims fitted to the Wedges are:
8" = 20mm
8.5" = 14mm
9" = 20mm

Can't suggest any suppliers for alternatives, but I will say avoid Image Wheels at all costs. I speak from personal experience.

Just to add, I have run all 3 sizes on my 400 without problems front or rear (16 x 9 all round at present) including on track. No arch rubbing or other clearance issues, although I am running 225 45 16 tyres rather than 245s which would alter the gearing too much. I have the SH tie bars at the rear which give more space, but IIRC the closest point to the wheel is part of the lower wishbone.

Hi Wedgenut just looked at my 16x9's which do say ET20mm ! You mention that 245's would alter the gearing too much, when comparing 245's to 225's we are talking about the width of the tyre so how would this change the gearing ? You have already taken the gearing into consideration by changing down to a 45 profile, so the gearing will be nearly the same as before I would of thought ! .... If at any point I'm incorrect then I bow to your superior knowledge. thumbup

I do have a question though, is it ok to run 15's on the front and 16's on the back ? Do any of you guys run this combination and if so is the handling effected at all ??

Sorry Chapperssx, I should have been a bit clearer. The ideal size equivalent would be from 225 x 50 x 15 (standard) to 245 x 40 x 16 using the Tuscan wheels. However, this latter size is an odd one that does not seem to be available (on BlackCircles anyway), so I went for 225 x 45 x 16 which results in approx. 0.5% difference in rolling circumference compared to standard. The 245 x 45 x 16 would have given about 3.5% difference in rolling circumference. I've never run different diameters front to back, so can't comment, but I think a few guys do that.

Hi Martin

A few people run 15's on the front and 16's on the back.

I run that way on my 450's no problem.

Off course you must get the correct tyre size for the back.

Cheers guys once the 16's are rebuilt they will be shod with 245's then offered up to see if there are any clearance issues.

I specifically have 245/45/16's on the rear of mine and it works well. I got a pair of the ex-racer split rims for them. They put down the power much better than 225's and the rubber available is better.

In fact the speedo is more accurate than before (I suspect before it was overreading so 135 came up as 140).

The tyres are quite close to the tie bars but you can still get a fag paper or two in between so there's no rubbing.

I had some spacers on with mine (16s) tenner from halfrauds . 245/45/16 here also in fact I flogged Adam a tasty set of rubbers for his wheels.

That was almost 3 years ago - I think they are long gone now. I got another set fitted last year - Toyo Proxes.

I just found this site which has a massive selection of wheel data:

wheel-size.com/calc/

Unfortunately it doesn't have TVR's but it seems that the 1989/90's merc SE's have very similar sizes available.
