Looking for a new car for the step daughter.

Sorry unless you either out a deposit down or have a deal in principle you cannot test drive any of the cars you ve been looking at???

Paperwork and box ticking.

Oh well how times have changed.

Its not what I found, I walked into a nissan and they let me test drive a navara without even discussing figures etc.

I know a Hyundai dealer who lets locals test drive even without taking down any details - quite exceptional I'm sure, but shows not all dealers are the same.

We're in Derbyshire and have been to 2 today. Not pacific brand garages I will say but both wanted as said in the OP.

Currently sat in another just outside Derby awaiting to test drive 2 cars and he ll have a sale. Job jobbed.

No way would I EVER put a deposit down on a car before a test drive.
I have been set on a particular car before, test driven it and then found out that I dont like something about the driving experience so not bought it.

Not experienced this with car dealers, all I have been asked for is a few details no doubt so their insurance applies.

If they are trying to get an agreement in principle before a test drive walk away and tell them why as loudly as possible in the showroom.

Never had an issue with being able to test drive a car.

Even popped into Mercedes dealership to have a nose at a car for my dad last year, and had a salesman trying to get me to take out an SL55 despite me stating I wasn't buying anything!

The last one we left. We had discussed figures and he was asking for a deposit etc.
.we went to sit in the car and upon returning
, he basically said when your ready give me a ring and we take tge deposit and sort your test drive.

I simply said no money will change hands before shes been behind the wheel.

And then said I think you can work out what that means.

And believe me, we're talking about a Seat and a Peugeot here nothing high end.

But thats what she wants and im not allowed to intervene.

But I can guarantee that when it goes wrong my phone will be the 1st that rings.

Never had an issue, then again I have always been a potential customer. (Despite very possibly NOT looking like one!)

I am sure there are plenty of space cadets out there that take the mickey though.

Sounds like a crap dealer.

When I last went to buy a car, I'd hardly sat down when the salesman said 'Right, Let's get you in a car and go for a run'.

No qualifying, no 'Let's talk numbers', etc.

Bought a fair few cars in my time and I've always been offered a test drive before doing a deal.

Yes, we know, as I am sure the OP does, then again, I am a bit "wet" behind the ears...

(And also carp at jokes!)

I attempted to buy a GT-R from a dealer last year, drove for a couple of hours to see it, the dealer wasn't there but the car wash guy said he was at the gym and would be back shortly.

I sat in the car for 10 minutes looking at the vast array of buttons then looked through the history for 10 minutes, he arrived and we spoke about numbers.

He offered a reasonable value on one of my current cars for px, but I'd have liked a little more so said I'd buy cash, he moved on to finance, which I didn't need.

So when he realised I didn't want finance nor wanted to px he went cold on me - I asked for a test drive and was told if I put down a deposit now he'd move 5 cars so we could go out, it was two cars that needed moving and one was my Maserati.

We stood in silence for what seemed like an eternity, 20 seconds or so, he shrugged and I looked confused as I drove home in the wrong car... I'd even brought the misses with me to drive the Maser home as I sprinted back in the Datsun - weird.

Before a dealer chimes in with years of experience of time wasters - I now have a GT-R (never got round to selling the Mas hehe )

no intention of buys, just wanted to try out different cars, pair of time wasters but it kept them amused

worst i have ever had is yes you can test drive, need a copy of license for ID, plus we want to hold the keys of the car I turned up in

Not all dealers are like this. Go elsewhere. Simples.

As with others, I've had mixed experiences, from dealers who just aren't interested in selling me a car despite me already knowing I want one and being ready to buy, to dealers who've just handed me the keys to a car or two to let me have a play and see what I think. It's like job applications or asking women out on dates; some go nowhere but some are fantastic, you've just got to take the rough with the smooth. After a while though you get to know which dealers are good: I know for example where to go to buy a Lotus, Toyota and Porsche and will stay loyal to the dealerships in question because they're friendly and professional, whereas equally I know where I definitely wouldn't go!

As for the OP, I'd suggest trying somewhere else!

We have gone somewhere else. Hence she is currently signing the paperwork due to every point in your post being achieved by the salesmen that met us at the door as we walked in.

Good service is hard to find.

I allow unaccompanied test drives to those over 21 who leave a car in the yard whilst doing it, insurance stipulates this. I generally sound folk out before and its seldom i refuse. I generally open the car check its starting and got a wee bit of fuel in it and tell them to do as they wish and if they are happy with the price, condition and colour to take it away as long as they need. Seems to work. I have tried sounding them out about trade ins etc but mr punter tends to want to do that after. Totally counter productive in my mind, but not worth pushing them. Still get the odd idiot coming back saying "yeah, great, loved it. But i want a red one.. Or any other colour than it actually is.
