Sold an XR2 many years ago, cheap private sale, Told the guy the clutch adjuster was dodgy and that the price was low to reflect this, told him that he needs to book it in to get it done soon because the ratchet will slip once in a while.
2 days later he knocks on the door and demands his money back because the clutch pedal ratchet has "done some strange things and the pedal went to the floor once, I don't feel safe driving it" Totally denied even having the conversation with me about it. in the end he got told to go away, he wanted me to pay for it. Not a chance.
Another private sale was a spares or repair Maestro, it was a bit worn out and needed a wiper linkage and other jobs doing, I sold it for £120 because I didn't need it anymore , I had finished repairing my normal everyday car that had been hit by another driver who drove off
So I sold the Maestro (with 6 months tax and test left I might add !) 5 1/2 months later the female buyer comes back and demands money back for work needed for the MOT ! She was told to go away as well.
The public are f
king idiots.

The public are f
king idiots. A few years back I remember a guy who was P/X ing a Escort XR3i,agreed the deal and P/X price but when he turned up to pick up his new car the XR3 had bog standard wheels on it........! " Oh are kid wanted them for his car "........!
And then there was the one with the electric aerial (do you remember them) anyway after agreeing a P/X price the car turned up with the aerial gone and chewing gum filling up the hole.......!

Had a guy call up and ask me about a freelander I was selling cheap as I needed it shifting quick due to me going abroad. In fact I had loads of calls it was the 4x4 frenzy I think. Anyway he rang up, an indian gentleman from london asking if there will be tax included. No I said. So he agrees to buy and I offer to pick him up from the train station in the vehicle to help him out. Anyway I said to confirm by phone before he arrives etc.
He never turned up which pissed me off as I had cancelled a social event to flog it. When asked did he miss his train he said no I am still in london. What an idiot. Anyway I called back someone who'd called about the freelander and it went the next day.
Said first buyer rang up trying to disguise his accent asking if the car was still available and started freely wailing and crying down the phone when he found it had been sold. What a loon.
Anyway the story doesn't end there. The guy who took the freelander called up a few weeks later saying they are known to have gearbox problems and the tyres are looking tired? Sold as seen private sale so I am wondering what he's on about or after. He was just calling to let me know he expected a contribution towards a new gearbox if it needed one and the same with the tyres and any other bits. Imagine if this was law you'd only ever buy one car and never ever sell it! He was told in no uncertain way he had bought it second hand and no guarantee was implied or given so politely jog on you muggy sigh.
The only car I feel guilty about selling is the escort that caught fire on a friend. Not so bad that he didn't know it had caught fire with me and I warned him but he's a chancer and loved it. Apparently it self immolated shortly after the next sale but no one hurt thankfully.
Oh yeah and I sold a friend a escort that when taken to northern ireland turned out to be a cut and shut? This worried me as I'd thrown it all over in the few months I had it and it was bought for pennies so I don't financially see how all the effort paid of for the guy who did it?
Oh yeah and the two hairy bikers who scammed me out of 20 quid when counting the cash out for a dt125 bike. I was only 17 the f
kers so when they called back the next day to find out the trick to getting it kick started I kept tight lipped and said I didn't know what they were finding so hard the pansies. I think that got 20 quids worth of laughs for me imagining their old fat bodies kicking it over into eternity.
Lots of uneventful sales intersperse all this hilarity but these are the stand outs.
Oh and the audi quattro diesel 2.5 that failed its german mot weeks after sale and is now a monument somewhere in an army camp in germany slowly taking to ground. That kept eating engine gaskets and I've never had luck with german cars so I got shot.
Last but not least the R1 that I'd actually put diesel into (ooopsie!) whilst my sister was filling her car up and chatting b
ks to me. Never done this before or after but she is annoying. Anyway only put a few litres in and kept topping up with petrol on the way to hers where I was storing it. Fast forward to her f
kwit w
ker partner leaning it and scraping the new paintjob against a wall and using it as a rest for his tools completely f
king it up. All cleared up when his mate bought it for the engine into his fazer. I told him about the diesel cock up but he was unstoppable in his want for that engine. It was smokey at first but eventually cleared. So once he got his engine out the fazer and the R1 engine in it did the decent thing and seized. Felt bad but apparently he got his money back breaking the R1.
I'm sure theres more I'll put them in as they come back to me!

Age 19 or 20 and I'd sold my silver XR2 to some 30 something guy. Next day he calls up to ask if I'd cancelled my Insurance Policy. I said no, I've swapped a new car onto it. This was pre-ANPR days and when you could hoodwink a copper with a Certificate of Insurance. The guy hadn't insured it, stuffed it into a ditch in Lincolnshire and was hoping he could come to a deal to claim off my insurance!
The classic is service history.
'Yeah yeah it's got full history....'
Collection day come around and guess what? The service history is no where to be seen, but what am I supposed to do? I've got a brand new car outside with the customers name registered to it, so we just have to suck it up and the customer knows it.

You just have to tough it out. Revalue PX and say if they provide the service books/spare keys/load cover etc in the next couple of days you will give them the difference back. That's life people don't always tell it how it is. Most people are okay though.'Yeah yeah it's got full history....'

Why wouldn't professional go through all of this prior to agreeing a p/x and factoring accordingly? 'Yeah yeah it's got full history....'

If they 'forget' then it's worth x today but y on the day if your forgotten docs turn up.
I can't see why a commercial business minded person would value at y having not seen the docs, hope they turn up and shoulder the risk... unless of course the seller actually deals based on x anyway and y is result/bonus if it turns up and merely internet whinge-fodder if a doesn't

Slightly off topic, more 'buyers are nobheads' than 'buyers are liars', but...
A private sale of my 205 gti 1.9, regretted ever since.
One guy came to look at it with his missus. I saw them having a walk round it so left them to it. As they walked up to the house I opened the front door to greet them. His opening line was "it's had a hard life, hasn't it". I nearly shut the door there and then but thought I'd try and learn from his amazing tyre kicking skills. "how do you mean?" I asked. "well for a start someone's replaced the carpets with the wrong colour, gti carpets are red" and then he sneered "and it's a weird shade of black, what the hell have you used on it?". At this point I did shut the door. There's no way in the world I was selling my limited edition, sorrento green pug to such a smarmy f
kwit.
My only consolation from the eventual sale is that the buyer knew exactly what it was, and probably appreciated it more than I did- intending to replace the boy racer touches a previous owner had added (nobby gearnob, white dials etc) and restore it to original, something I'd never been that bothered about getting round to doing.

I've not sold many cars privately, probably 5 or so.
But twice I've had the buyer be short of cash, once by £100 when selling a Nissan primera (car was sold for 6k) and when selling my 1973 mini pickup the buyer was short £150
They usually have the full amount in their pocket once you call their bluff. It's amazing how they suddenly find that last £100 when you are walking back indoors. But twice I've had the buyer be short of cash, once by £100 when selling a Nissan primera (car was sold for 6k) and when selling my 1973 mini pickup the buyer was short £150
I sold a Laguna with a fresh mot to a guy who then taken it to kiwi fit for an inspection after the sale. Once the list of unnecessary work was given to him he demanded I pay for it or he was reporting me to vosa. I said since I have nothing to do with mots he could go ahead.
