Hi all, looking at getting a new car this year. I do around 10k miles PA and don't need a 4 seater partcularly (no kids). Around 18k to spend. A new fiesta ST with mountune is 215ps/236lbft and sub 1200kg so pretty quick and according to all the reviews great fun to drive. Topped off with claimed 48mpg, cheap to tax/insure/service and with warranty/AA its the sensible choice. ST2 is quite well specced too with heated recaros, heated screen, DAB/IPOD etc. The alternative is something used, potentially 2 seater so TT s-line (211ps), slightly older TTS (272), Z4 sdrive 3.0 or possibly 3.0 turbo (as its a bloody heavy car so needs the more powerful engines). SLK is out (auto only). Wildcard is Scirocco R as they look nice should go well (265ps and lighter than Golf R). Any suggestions or experience of the listed motors?

Ford are pretty trustworthy. If buying new you get to choose the colour, trim and options. Only downside is depreciation.

And lets face it... those other two 2-seater thingies are a bit man-face-moisturiser. So you could be 'good lad' or 'tosser' depending on which sort of car you go for.

If you are looking at Z4/TT etc then you also need to look at the best car in that class IMVHO...

Of course, you dont have the reasurance of warranty like the new Fiesta, but you can find OPC warrntied cars, and private cars with Porsche warranty left for the money.

In my opinion lotus Exige doesn't seem to have to "hairdresser vibe" (if you care) of the other cars will be faster than the st, as good mpg I would imagine, it will be more fun and in 3 years sell for basically what you paid for it. Obviously 2 seats but the boot is bigger than you think. Do it! smile

I think an exige or caterham would be too raw for a daily. Boxster S is a good shout, always liked them and highly rated drivers car (quick too!). My main worry is engine reliability. The 3.4S is know to suffer from IMS/RMS & bore scoring issues which can end with the engine going bang. I couldn't stomach a £10k engine replacement! Apparently main dealer warranty would cover most of that bill but still wouldn't want the worry of that happening hanging over me. TTS is a rapid car and in coupe form isn't THAT girly is it? lol Quite like Scirocco R and not many of them about. I'd like to test drive the fiesta ST to see if it really as much fun as the journos say it is.

I have had 3 Porsches, a 3.8, and two 3.4s. I have helped 3 people buy 3.4 Boxtsers and Caymans, and currently run a 3.4. None have failed. (oops that's done it).

If a car has OPC warranty it will be covered (so long as you didnt bang through the rev limiter).

TT a little dated for my liking, but I do like the 3.2 (had one). A very different car to drive compared with the Boxtser.

here is an approved used Boxtser S manual, so this will come with 2 years warranty.

Easily get that for £18k or less middle of winter.

You can get an ST for far less than £18k, even with the Mountune kit fitted...

If you don't need 4 seats then get a 2seater roadster, there's plenty of time for hatchbacks or 5 doors when you specifically need them. My advice would be to look at Honda S2000, BMW Z4 and the Porsche Boxster. All three are epic cars, if very different in approach

Thanks, I'm sort of ahead of you there..my current car is a 2008 S2000. Had it over 2 years hence considering a change later this year. Boxster is the best drivers car, but I still worry a little about running costs and risk of engine problems. Z4 sdrive is an option, seems to be more of a GT than a true sports car, its very heavy and I couldnt go for a small engined variant so would have to be 3.0 petrol. I have seen a few brokers offer fiesta ST2 for around 16k so even with mountune it would be brand new on the road £16.5k. Still undecided...

Just to come back on the running costs - the service intervals on the Box are 20k or 2 years, alternating between major and minor, and in my experience no worse (in fact better) than BMW, Merc and Audi.

I'd go with the ST. I also have an S2000 and while it's great, there is something missing that I can't put my finger on. I had a 172 Cup for almost 4 years and I just don't think you can beat a hot hatch if you only have one vehicle. I won't be considering a 2 seater as my next car, and in actual fact I'm also considering a Fiesta ST Mountune in September once I've had a full summer with my S2000.

I love the ST but it is the top of a lower division, would go up a couple of divisions with that budget.

Scirocco as a wildcard, I went in my mates new diesel one today and have to say its a lovely car.

Not a big fan of the 370z styling plus low 20's mpg and not the nicest interior rules it out. Z4M always been a bit compromised, quick but getting a bit long in the tooth. I actually prefer the new model Z4 styling wise to be honest. Plus the 'M' tax for servicing it will likely be expensive to own(poor mpg too). Scirocco R has got my interest. Nice interior, strong engine, adaptive ride standard so even on the lovely 19" wheels it should ride well. Apparently handle well too. Depending on price its a good option. TT or TTS is another, TTS is rapid and a nice place to be. Not the greatest handler but no slouch. Or play it safe and go for the mountune ST, brand new, 3 years warranty, no MOT, cheap tyres/mpg/tax/insurance. Would still be worth 7.5k in 3 years so depreciation won't cost that much and running costs alot cheaper than the older sports cars. Tough decision!
