If anybody hasn't seen the remains of the tub of his LEC F1 car which he crashed at Silverstone in 1977 then I recommend it. Viewable at Donington and quite astonishing to realise that he survived the apparently 170+g impact.
DP was a handy driver- not top drawer but quick enough to run in Grands Prix.
The biggest question- which has haunted me for 30 odd years - is how did DP know that Roger Williamson was trapped in his burning March, and how or why did all the other drivers continue to race in the belief, or self delusion , that Roger had escaped? What did they think DP was doing ?

I may be incorrect, but when I visited the collection last year the Purley car was no longer at the museum. I'm sure they said the family had taken it back. I could be wrong of course!DP was a handy driver- not top drawer but quick enough to run in Grands Prix.

Either way David Purley will always be a hero of mine.

I believe that DP witnesses the accident and the car bursting into flames. That's how he knew Williamson was still in there. The other drivers saw a burning car with a bloke alongside and in the few moments they saw of it each time it looked like a driver trying to save his own car. They couldn't possibly know the truth.Gassing Station | General Motorsport | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
