Hello all,

I am considering a internal change at work, which would mean I would need to commute three or four times a week 50 miles each way. 95% of this distance will be on (empty) duel carriageway and motorway.

So I am considering changing my car/buying a second car and I'm looking for a cheap as chips motor. There are loads to choose from, but none of the usual suspects have cruise control (which I really want).

Can anyone recommend a cheap to buy and cheap to run car with cruise?

Thanks.

Some can have them retrofitted for not much - what are you looking at?

Older mondeo.

Ghia or Titanium.

Cheap as chips, reliable and more tech that most including a heated windscreen.

I had a Leon TDi which had cruise control. Bought for £1400 about 18 months ago. Think it was SE spec? I imagine one with a half decent engine and slightly less stodgy tyre sizes could be quite entertaining.

Saab 95

£500 - pretty sure these have cruise as standard, and a very comfy place to be.

Most VAG (Golf, A3 etc) from about 03 can have cruise fitted for about 300 sheets.

Volvo S60 D5 SE? Economy & good standard equipment including CC. Also around at low budget to higher budget for a mint example, whichever suits your needs.

A fair chunk of TDI Golf's had them, I'm sure there'll be plenty within budget. Given how common they are I'm sure it wouldn't be difficult to find one specced with leather heated seats etc to go with.

+2. Simple reliable design with decent comfort for commuting. Find a type-V if you can, or a 2.0 SE.

All of the Alfa 147 and 156's i've owned have had cruise. Think it was probably standard fit across the range (not had a 1.6 so not sure about these)

I would go with this, Mk3 Mondeo TDDI or something. Less than a grand, comfortable, a surprisingly nice drive and the heated screen which is a real benefit on a daily car. TDCIs a lot more common but also more prone to injector issues, a pretty good engine (for a <£1k diesel) when working properly though.

Thanks for the replies.

Interesting petrol cars have been mentioned: I would have automatically thought diesel for a straight motorway run....

most accords I have come across have it fitted.

As an aside, you will also not have to worry about it breaking down.
