PCM 2.1 Overheating???

I hope somebody on here has an idea what may be going on inside my PCM 2.1.
On Friday i drove home for the weekend (3 hr drive). Roughly 2 hours into the drive, i noticed that whilst scrolling throught the various scales on the map screen, some of them would not fully load, ie. the small progress bar in the bottom right hand side of the screen would begin to fill, and then stop at approx 50-70% with the map not fully loaded. I tried to reset the system (1,4,8) and the same thing was happening. As i continued the journey, the system became more and more degraded until it become completely unusable and switched itself off. The screen at the time was giving off lots of heat and the buttons were warm to the touch.
After arriving home, i parked the car up for a couple of hours. Upon returning to the car i sparked it up and low and behold the satnav was working just fine for a number of short (20 minute) runs around the local area.
This morning on drving back to work, after about 2 hours on the motorway the exact same symptoms came back. Starting with the inabitlity to scroll throught the map scales, then the message "Navigation DVD Unreadable" appearing when i pressed the "Navi" button. As i continued, the whole system began to act erratically, turning off and on, and then finally unable to even show a map before switching itself off.
Having been parked up outside my place of work for two hours, i've just gone outside and everything is working just fine again. Full Satnav operable and no problems at all.
I'm wondering if anybody else has experienced this?
In my limited knowledge of electronic systems, it seems to me like the PCM is overheating and this is why the system is slowly beginning to degrade as it gets hotter and hotter, and similarly works again after being given time to cool down. I've checked all fuses, i'm running a genuine Nav DVD and the car or system have not been subject to any change over the recent months/years. This problem has simply come out of the blue. Perhaps there is a fan to cool the PCM which may have given up the ghost? i just dont know.
Any help would be really appreciated.

Hi Les, It does look like overheating doesn't it? Of course it could just be a faulty component - yes I know, but that's all that occurs to me at the moment.
I don't believe there's a fan in the PCM. I have mine out at the moment, having removed it to replace it with something up to date, so I'll check this evening.
Is the car covered by a warranty? If so, I'd get it sorted out that way.

There's no fan in the PCM; there is actually quite a lot of empty space considering the size of the casing. As I said earlier, if you do have a warranty, it might be worth considering using it, otherwise these people could be worth trying:

As luck wouldn't have have it, my OPC warranty ran out in December!
I've now removed the nav DVD disc from the frunk loader, and the whole system seems to be cooking on gas, nice and fast the way it should be, with full nav functionality within the local area at least. Any searches of routing requests for farther afield requires the insertion of the DVD.

Sods law eh? I guess the test is to try another disk but unless you know someone who'd lend you one, you're stuck. Ideally you also need the same generation disk because a later one may need a software update.Glad you seem to have narrowed the problem.
