Anybody had TMJ issues ?
Discussion
Been suffering with tinnitus and other strange symptoms, my ENT chap was at a loss of what was causing the tinnitus after trying all the usual stuff but he did mention it might be my TMJ (tempromandibular joint).
So of I went to an expensive TMJ dentist and had an MRI done on the jaw, came back with a bit of displacement in the jaw and he said the only way to go was to correct it with a mouth brace/splint, had it fitted 3 days ago and lasted 2 days...
I was meant to wear the bloody thing 24/7 and even eat with it in but it was such a pain to eat in and in my job, there was no way I could use it at work, so have to ditch the splint, oh and it would of changed my bite too so after using the splint I would of then needed potential orthodontic work etc etc £££££ !
Does anybody have any experience of nasty TMJ/TMD issues ?

I have it. No pain as of yet though which I am thankful for but it does ache sometimes along with clicking and popping. My MRI stated I have Stage 2 wilkes at the moment. Around 2 years ago, I was miserable. I had headaches every day and my whole body was sore. Then my jaw started clicking.
I went to see a TMJ specialist in Surrey (£350 an hour!) and the first thing he got me to do was take my shoes and socks off and said to me , 'you are flat footed, go and sort that out and come back to see me'; you need to sort the root of your problem. To say I was dumbfounded was an understatement but he really knew what he was doing. And so I went to an orthotic centre who confirmed his thoughts and fitted me with custom orthotics for my shoes; my whole body was out of line due to my feet being retarded. Instantly my headaches stopped and I no longer had a sore back or neck etc. Turns out its all linked and my foot problems ultimately (most likely) caused my jaw to shift out of line like the rest of my body. Amazing to know and so glad I went to see the original guy.
- ***OP, perhaps get your posture etc checked first? Its obviously not applicable to everyone though.
I had a bite splint for around a year until last November when my dentist dissapeared off the face of the earth (NOT the original specialist as I simply couldnt afford to do the jaw treatment with him after the initial consultation) and left me having to find someone to pick up the pieces! It was a pain to wear all the time and eat with especially, but it worked wonders though, it totally got rid of my cliking and popping but now I am without it (it broke) the clicking has returned a bit.
Unfortunately, the permanent fix is to make sure the teeth sit together correctly as to not stress the muscles and keep everything in line. Mine are not and are totally off despite having braces as a kid. This needs to be done with permanent braces (£7.5k all in and will take 24 months ive been told - this is then followed by a retainer for a year or so). I havent committed to this yet and signed on the dotted line but have had the quote etc. I think I do need to have it done, im only mid 20's and my jaw will be f
ked later in life if i dont. It depresses me no end though especially having had braces as a child which did me no favours!I have categorically stated that I want the braces on the backs of the teeth (invisible) even if they are not as effective and will take longer which I am told they will. Very vain but I dont want train tracks again at my age - probably wouldnt do me any favours walking around building sites!
Do something about it though OP, the issues can get very bad and I have read a lot about the condition. It can proceed into unbearable daily pain which needs surgery to correct. The sooner you do something, the easier it is to fix.
Read up, its good to know what is going on;

This one is really good to understand the joint and what is happening. The click I have is my joint 'disk' popping in and out of place;

Hope this helps.

Cheers vescaegg,
I've got stage three, lots of clicking but don't care about that.
I really cannot wear a splint for 24/7 due to my job, so will be seeing a maxillofascial chap soon to get a different angle on it.
Who was the tmj specialist out of interest ?

Andre Hedger. Cant reccomend him enough - just couldnt afford him!

Thanks.
I wonder if there is another solution to this issue other than surgery or splint therapy.
Splint therapy seems to be a very good way of raping your wallet, my scenario was go to dentist, dentist diagnoses tmd then proceeds to tell me the solution is a splint for £3000 for six months treatment, then because your bite has been changed you have two options, ween yourself off the splint but then symptoms could come back or 12-24 months in braces costing upwards of £7500 !
Maybe I'm being a bit sceptical/cynical and no definitive medical research has been done on splint therapy but really if it worked then it would be an accepted medical practice. Some US sites state that you should not cause irreversible changes to your bite as there is no guarantee that the treatment could work, I put that to my dentist and he stated that his method worked but no research had been done properly on it !

My splint was £300 I think plus probably £300 more in total for the visits to have it adjusted / built up when required. This was over the course of 12-18months not exactly sure how long...

Hence my sceptism, I guess it is about right for private dentistry though.My splint was £300 I think plus probably £300 more in total for the visits to have it adjusted / built up when required. This was over the course of 12-18months not exactly sure how long...
It is possible to get the brace part done on the NHS but they have very strict criteria. I have a review referral from my dentist hopefully soon to see if i can go down this route.
The feet affect leg, buttock and back muscles. The upper ones attach to cranium and so create this distant condition. Last year I went on a course to Lake Como where a guru in this and white fillings gives his wisdom. Vanini. His work was sensational and way beyond my dreams. He is interested in the way other muscles can affect the tmj. He got some of us to raise our arms with one being easier for him to push down. After a bit of neck massage this weakness disappeared. So its very very specialised and not your normal private dentist.

Mac you got any links to this guru ? Kinesiology is another principle I guess, there is some link between poor posture and tmj issues but finding someone in the uk who specialises in this, is proving very difficult indeed.This will sound ridiculous OP but get this book;
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Taking-Control-TMJ-Recover...
I got it delivered last Saturday and frankly, I am astounded. It has a section on posture and its importance (which I was sort of aware of) but also a section of excercises written by someone who actually knows whats what.
For 3 years I have had an achey jaw and clicking probably 20-25 times a day.
Since Saturday I have had no aches and my jaw has clicked once. ONCE!
The excercises are simple but obviously they are doing something for me. Even my front teeth which were out of line have moved towards centre by about 2-3mm from where they were to where they should be.
Witchcraft.
I would note that I have no commercial interest in this book; I am just excited
