Diarrhea bug going round - see your GP

Took my wife to the nurse practitioner this afternoon because she has very bad tummy pains and diarrhea. She takes a lot of tablets for other problems so thought it wise to get an expert opinion on what was the best stuff to help.
Nurse got her to see a GP within minutes and the GP said he was very glad she came in so soon as it is a bug going round and some people are waiting weeks/taking over the counter stuff.
This bug, apparently, is a nasty one and without proper treatment can take up to 4 months to clear up.
Just thought I'd give you all a heads up - but I hope no one needs it!
ETA - It's 'only' 4 weeks not 4 months - apparently I don't listen to her! But it's still bad enough.
