Sooty Plugs

Treated the pride and joy to a new set of plugs, leads and points today.

Nowt wrong with the original plugs apart from the fact they were a bit sooty. Now I know this means it's running rich and in the short term I'll give it the benefit of the doubt and say that could be due to the old HT leads not working properly but if I check the plugs in a few miles again and the soot is back what's next? Rolling road and re-map?

Too much stop start driving? Or overfuelling, for example if you have cats caused by an exhaust air leak.

Don't do much stop start stuff so probably not.

What was the next bit? Knackered cats? Don't think so though I suppose an emissions check would show that up wouldn't it?

Exhaust leak? No sign of that.

Ok lets start with a clean sweep sue we can see whats going on. You'd expect the plugs to be sooty which would normally be rich running, cor bett these days it's down to the fuel, unleaded does that hence tailpipes always being sooty too.

I bet your chim fits you like a glove puppet so get out there and drive the thing!

Thanks for that Jools. I'm assuming that if softy stop-start driving is bad for the car driving fast must be good? That'll be my defence then, Jools made me do it

Cheers for that I never knew that, I assumed that tail pipes being sooty after a run was it running rich.
