Rock Bands & Alcohol - Tropper ale

Not so mutch a tale of excess, but rather a question of...has anybody tried any of these drinks with rock band connections - AC/DC and Motorhead do their own brand wines for example.

So, tonight I tried an Iron Maiden Trooper ale, which is made by Robinsons in the north east of the UK.

Bl**dy nice it was as well. 4.7%, so quite quaffable, and available in my local Sainsers - Result. ANybody else tried it, or any of the others?

Just realised I can't spell Trooper either!!!!

I have a friend who only realised after 2 and a bit years he spelt the trooper that way in his email address. We never said, was only when a girl he was chatting to asked what tropper was did he realise.


The Trooper is a bit different to the other ales by the bands, Maiden spent some actual time developing it.

Robinsons are from Stockport, north west, not east, they brew a much more interesting range of beers these days than they used to.

Robinson's also worked with Elbow on their "Build a rocket boys!" brew, which is a little lighter than Trooper, but damn fine for a session ale nonetheless.

I really like Trooper, I was suckered in because I'm a Maiden fan (and it was 3 for £5 in Morrisons) but was pleasantly surprised by how decent it is - I suspect many of the others are more of a branding exercise whereas this seems to as crafted as the blurb suggests.

Has anyone tried the Mastodon beer from Mahrs or the Sepultura Weizen? I can't say I've ever seen them for sale in shops.

A dyslexic friend of mine, who's a Star Wars nut always types 'stormtropper'

I had a bottle of this a few weeks ago and thought it was rather decent! I only bought it because of the Iron Maiden connection which I assumed was tenuous at best, but it's good to know they actually put some time into developing it.

Another here for Trooper.

I tried it for the first time a couple of weeks ago, and was very impressed indeed. It reminded me of brews from the Wood brewery (which is hardly faint praise from me).

I noticed they seem to run a lot of music events, but I didn't know about these, Mahrs' pils and helles are great (on the subject of Bamberg, the Schlenkerla Helles brewed in the same equipment as their smoked beers is fantastic).

It looks like those have been sold over here, but I have no idea where to find Mahrs other than Beers of Europe who've not had any in stock for some time.

Signature Brew are british and make only band beers http://www.businessweek.com/articles/2012-03-21/si... , and there's a few American brewers with music inspired series.

The Trooper is a nice session ale.

6.66% - brewed by the Singer and Guitarist's brother who is the Head Brewer at North Star Brewery. Very dark, lots of flavour.
