The Perfect 996 GT2
Discussion
Hiya, looks like I'm finally going to be able to buy my favourite affordable super car - a 996 GT2. I could do with some help though. There precious few GT2s for sale at the moment and none really fit the bill. I'd rather have a Mk2 than a Mk1 and I'd rather have a clubby than a comfy. That said i guess it's all about condition really? I've owned a 996TT before (which I tweaked) and I know that a fully stamped service book is no guarantee of condition. Coolers leak, suspension links wear like mad, timing chains, gearboxes, alternators, fuel pumps..all good expensive stuff
My ideal car would be one with extremely diligently sorted suspension and some mild pro engine mods (Ruf or Fearnsport).
There is a 996 GT2 evo at Specialist Cars but I don't like the Gemballa wing at all and I am not mad keen on the rims either. These might seem like niggles but that could easily add up to £4k in changes - and that's before I take it to Chris at CG...that said it has a rebuilt engine and Specialist Cars have a pretty rock solid reputation...
What about 'The Stallion'??? they have a Mk GT2 for sale and seems to have sold a lot of GT2s over the years - I've never heard of them though.
I have read everything I can find about these cars but it's never enough to feel educated. Any Ideas?

I've actually seen the so called GT2RS at malton at a show many moons ago , my opinion is you would be far more better off buying originality rather than something it will never be ( a sticker ) , you are right it would be 5k to make it right but why not be patient and buy a " proper " car .... I personally think it's overpriced too ... Best of luck in your quest to fine a Perfect GT2 .
To be fair the Malton GT2 RS(s) are a bit more than a badge, and when they were built there was no sign of a genuine GT2 RS.
Having sat behind one of these at some speed when it has been exercised, they are damned quick; there was a subtle shake of the tail pipes, a blast of noise and then it was like watching the star ship enterprise go to warp 9.

This ^Mine was used for this months GT Porsche article, I had it up for sale tail end of last year had a few enquires but nothing worked out so still have it and decided to hold on to it, they are very special cars and finding a good straight one is proving to be more difficult.
Enjoy the search, most of the cars can be traced back through members on here.

The ECU was mapped by RS Tuning too IIRC.
I very much doubt mapping is by RS Tuning, they only sell complete packages, however SCoM does have one car with an RS Tuning engine in stockhttp://www.specialistcarsltd.co.uk/vehicle/porsche...

I'm only repeating what Mark or John told a potential customer two or three years ago when he enquired about the car.
Someone got mixed up (I reckon) - trivial to many but there is a big difference between an RS Tuning package and eg a DMS offering (to those who are into these sorts of things
Wow - I can't believe how helpful y'all have been. Regarding these Ruf Nardos please don't tease a girl. How can I be happy with anything else now that I know these things exist.
Regarding the SCoM car - apparently it has a high performance exhaust, hybrid turbos and a DMS remap. it's putting out (apparently) somewhere north of 500 hp. Now apparently there was a much nuttier car with more like 650 hp - perhaps this is the RS tuning car that you speak of.
I am a mega fuss pot on a car being dead-right and any car I by would need to be. I really want to get the springs and dampers sorted out. Ideally I would like to have OE-a-job a possible, so I guess this might the ruf incarnation of the PSS10 kit.

The yellow CS with the RUF package has the RUF turned suspension, brake kit, gearbox kit, mag 19" wheels as well as the full Nardo kit built up from a completely new block. Last time it was on the rollers was making 632bhp and that is without being able to get much air through the intercoolers as well as delivering a very very smooth power curve. Handling is amazing on it with that setup, no understeer at all and when the back does come round its very progressive, sold me totally on how complete a package RUF really do offer. It made 206mph at Vmax last time it ran there so isn't a slow car!
On resale I think its one of the only companies that does add value to the resale of the car, not what they charge (which is very very high) but wouldn't see it as a negative in terms of taking away originality.

A call to SCOM would probably be usefull. John may have the original rear deck / spoiler and original wheels in the workshop. Or Richy Sykes, the original owner may have them somewhere.I remember at the old SCOM trackdays at Croft, Richy used to drive the car there on the BBS wheels, then have the standard wheels fitted at the track, shod with track rubber.
It was / is an absolute beast though. And your right, there was another car built by SCOM, a black one which had additional mods. Plus a 996 Turbo which wasn't far behind performance wise.

That sound awesome. What did they do to the chassis. Is this the Ruf version of the Bilstein PSS10 with their own front ARB? Please rear toe links?
That's got to be a 50k Euro engine I guess !
Yes the RUF tuned version of the PSS10 with their anti roll bars. They use a lot of the Porsche motorsport bits on the links and gearbox just helpfully with the part numbers changed so you can't work out exactly what they have used. Seems they raid the motorsport division for the basis of most of the upgrades and then tweak them. That's got to be a 50k Euro engine I guess !
The interesting thing talking to the factory is that RUF and their guarantee and TUV approval means the engines are tested to destruction and built do flat out runs everyday all day as they have German customers pounding up and down autobahns everyday. To get that sort of power with the reliability is how they justify their prices.
Have come across lots of tuned turbos and some GT2's that claim massive power but never seen one that runs side by side with the RUF's on a regular basis, you just have to look at the VMax hall of fame to see how many RUF cars there are in there. To me the GT2 is the perfect base car for them, no need for body kits etc and as standard Porsche were cautious on setup and power to some extent.
