I've got one too, as of two weeks ago! Best thing I've discovered is that the 4.3 can legaly be de-catted (well, as long as it's registered pre Aug '93).Having heard a 4.3 pre-cat Griff! I shall definitely be yanking them out.

Colin

Isn't there something in the bible recommending that you only remove the pre-cats.....???

I would be very careful with the date.

The cat fitting date came in 1st Jan 1993. See here:

www.sustainable-development.gov.uk/sdig/improving/partf/greenbuy/25.htm

The EU type 1 emmissions require a cat and they came into force 1/1/1993
The Griff 4.x got round the issue by having Chassis reg in 1992.

Yes, I would too because the MoT requires a car to be tested as if it had a Cat from 1st Aug 1992; there is no requirement to have a Cat but you have to pass the test which is virtually impossible without one, depending on the age of the car. www.motuk.co.uk/manual_730.htm

I looked at the link but it took me to a Green Paper!

The following courtesy of Pebbledash - This forum

The legal position with cats is a little bit of a grey area, it is not iligal to remove them (as far as i can determin) but the car has to be fitted with them as new, also they are not required to be fitted to pass the MOT, But the CAR if manufactured after 1/8/93 and is not exempt for any reason MUST PASS the required Advanced emissions test(wrongly called the CAT test).
If the car can pass without the cats then, it would get its MOT. There is a source on the internet, and the gov stuff (very heavy reading) which details this.

here
www.bobmckay.co.uk/cattest.html

Quote:-
"CAT test is an unfortunate term which leads many to think that the MOT is testing the Catalytic converter fitted to later vehicles but this is not so.

The MOT is testing emissions, so if the emissions from the tailpipe meet the requirements the vehicle passes. Whether a CAT is fitted is irrelevant. The deciding factor is the vehicles date of first registration. A "Cat" may be fitted to a vehicle which only needs to meet the two gas test and if the emissions are satisfactory, it passes. A "Cat" may have been removed and the vehicle is required to meet the "Cat" test standard by virtue of its first registration date. If the emissions meet the standard then it passes."

Another point is that the TVR Griff and Chims had 3 cats originaly 2 pre cats and one main cat, the pre cats were there so that after x seconds of start up the car would pass a seperate emmisions test, this test is not part of the MOT but the car when delivered by the manufacture Must pass the test.

Go down the Green paper and ther are details of the various emission tests and when they came into force...

Alternatively look at

www.motuk.co.uk/manual_730.htm

for details on the cat test that is applied to most petrol cars after 1st Aug 1992.

Your choice but the car was required to have them, you won;'t pass the test without them (as the emission values effectively require the cats to be present to pass and not that they need to be there) and the insurance company need to be told.

Do a google search and you will find that 1 August 93 is not consistent at all with the no cat date. I expect Bob has made a typo...

its actually not as simple as a date i used to own an mot station and we were told by vosa (when a k registered peugoet 205 without cat or oxygen sensor came in)to be sensible and use your judgement if it was late registered and wasnt built with cats it could hardly pass a cat test however if it was built with a cat after august 1992 it must pass either a bet test (basic emissions test) or a full cat test and you will not pass this test without a working cat unless the car runs on lpg without a cat your car will give about .7%co and the mot limit is .3%

I have a 4.3HC Chim which I bought after looking at over 10 others as it was the best condition & the smoothest of all the ones I drove (Travelled 300 miles to buy it). It also felt much more responsive than the 4ltr ones I drove & I couldn't notice any diference between it & the 2 x 5lt ones I drove (I know long term I may have done but I have no regrets)

Still smiling 12 months later!

Howard.

It's the smiling that matters, not the size of your litres! (Yes I know every litre is the same size but - er - keep smiling anyway. Especially if it snows)

I was on the verge of purchasing a late 4.3 a few weeks ago but decided to stick with the S for a while until I could spend more on a nicer Chim.

I've seen a few 4.3's for sale recently.

I don't think there's a particular fascination, it would just be interesting to know how many were made.
