Evening PH'ers

I bought my car 29/12/13 and until now has been off the road.

The car had been off the road since 2009, but in all honestly, I never asked when the SORN renewal was.

The car was SORN until 31/12/13

I have had it on my drive up until last week, when some work was done and the MOT performed.

I have just gone to apply for a tax disc online, and was alerted that a "gap" had been found as the SORN ran out 31/12/13. I have purchased 6 months tax on it that says it starts on 1/1/14 - I was told by the website the DVLA may be in touch with me.

What is the likelihood of me getting a fine/trouble because of this?

Thanks!

Who knows...

I had similar and received notice they were taking me to court for £0.00

I called and said I'd pay them that over the phone but they insisted I had to go to court.

I finally got my sister (a solicitor) to convince them it was ridiculous but it took some effort.

Slim. But SORN stops when you become the new owner, you have to SORN it again. I doubt they'll chase you for 2 days.

Interesting, I have just taxed a vehicle today that hasn't been taxed since 02.
This same vehicle has been unlicensed since 2011 according to the dvla website, as I was going to check when the sorn ran out, wait for reminder then tax it.
Rang the DVLA explained the situation, was told it was down to them never issuing a red V5 for the vehicle and I would have to pay £25 more than likely to get one issued.

Luckily I found an old log book and they accepted it at the post office, will be interesting to see what they come back with on that.

Just less than a month, I reckon you might be lucky.

I think you will save £25. You sent in a valid log book therefore (I think) you will get the new one now required because of an almighty fraud on the DVLA and free. Be interesting to see. I do find the DVLA increasingly remote and unapproachable. Progress apparently.

OP, have you got the new V5C (that is, are you the registered keeper now)? If not, then the tax disc will go to the previous registered keeper (oops!). The SORN, incidentally, would have ended on 29/12/13 when you bought the car wink .

I presume this gap between 29/12/13 and 1/1/14 (the tax disc does expire on 30/6/14 or 31/12/14?) is the gap they are referring to? A couple of quid of lost 'rent' at the most? An £80 penalty would be punitive indeed (if you'd not taxed or SORNed the car I would have expected it to be picked up on their mid-February database run, when an £80 penalty could be reluctantly stomached - but for 2 or 3 days only?). Ludicrous rofl ...

Anyway, I wouldn't worry. Get back on here if they take it further smile .

I do have the new V5C with my name on it, but the website did confuse me a bit.

The website states that the new tax disc I have just applied for (6 months) starts 1/1/14, but I have just bought it today. So i'm really not sure!

Guess ill see soon!

Discs issued later in the relevant month that date back to the start of the month have this effect. Presumably you are paying for the full month and the disc covers that period.

I just got a £100 fine from the dvl a as my car was in the garage for a few months and I stopped the insurance without doing a SORN. The fine was reduced to £50 by prompt payment.

This only happened as the dvla had messed up my V5 when I moved house, rang to get it rectified, was sent the correct V5 and then 2 days later got my fine.

I've had slightly similar issues

You can't SORN a car on line unless you have the log book or the reminder - if it was already on SORN then you can't renew until it's due (new keeper on log book or expired)

The car was SORN until 31/12/13
So the last date for SORN Declaration would be 31 Jan 2014 (regardless of the expiry date of 31/12/2013)

However in Dec the rules changes and SORN became a once only task until re-taxed so Web site check would have said SORN IN PLACE until you got a log book in your name. At that point it would have reverted to unlicenced

You've started the tax from start of Jan

Unlikely they will bother in any way shape or form IMHO

I had a reminder letter saying my car was due SORN shortly, which I re applied for. Then received a letter with a £50 fine saying I had not renewed SORN or otherwise. It did say however to let them know if they are mistaken. Angrily ignored the letter as DVLA website did show the car SORN on the correct date as I had done it. A short while later received a letter saying the fine was now £100 regardless if I had done it on time or not, or go to court (as I made no contact to let them know of their error if they were wrong), angrier again admitted my ignorance and called to try and pay it. Waited my entire life on the phone already pretty annoyed and gave up as couldn't get an answer. The £100 has never been paid and I have had no further letters. This was 8 months or so ago now so nothing ever came of it... Wouldn't worry.

It's for 0 days because the tax he's bought starts the day after his sorn ran out.

Not quite, the SORN ran out the moment he bought the car on the 29th, car was not taxed until 2/3 days later.

They wont enforce this, I did a 6 week one not so long back and had no issues ( the website notified me of the same )

I have also had the £80 fine and back pay from forgetting one of the fleet, that was about 4 months though.

The DVLA wonders why it gets a bad reputation when it sends out rubbish notices like this!! rolleyes
