An R32 as a daily. What else should I consider instead?
Discussion
My commute is about to go from 45 min each way down to about 15min, so boring tdi can go and get something a little more interesting.
The Supercharged VX220 will stay for weekends/fun/trackdays.
So looking for something to use for work that can be used for work, rain wind or shine, but more entertaining to drive.
Has to be reliable and not cost much in maintenance, repairs etc as rather spend that cash on the VX. (No high mileage old RS4s!)
4 seats (I think) and be able to have a carseat when needed for weekend drive etc. Hence I've been looking at 5 doors, but 3 doors is possible.
Thinking hot hatch type stuff, but nothing too chav mobile. i.e. I don't want to turn up to meetings in a bugeye Scooby or a Focus RS (not that cash would stretch to the later).
HAS to be sub £9k

E46 isn't a bad shout to be honest, but running costs would be ALOT more than an R32 I reckon. (In terms of parts and servicing) Owned a Z4M for a year and the running costs were quite heavy going.
Just to add I've been looking at 55 plate R32s for the cheaper tax. Paying £500 tax on a daily and then another £280 on the VX is OTT even in my book.

What is the cost to change?
For 15 mins each way unless you make money shopping in TDI better to spend this on your s/c vx??
VX doesn't need cash spent on it, and isn't used at all this time of year. Cold, ice on inside of screen, fast road/track tyres, frozen locks etc. A far better idea in the summer tbh. That was why I thought an R32, same as my current mk5 but amazing engine noise (always wanted to own a VR6) and 4wd from the worst months when the VX is tucked away. (Not that this mild squib of a winter has given us anything of note yet)For 15 mins each way unless you make money shopping in TDI better to spend this on your s/c vx??

I found the R32 very disappointing. The only redeeming features are the glorious noise and the 4wd in snow.Just to add I've been looking at 55 plate R32s for the cheaper tax. Paying £500 tax on a daily and then another £280 on the VX is OTT even in my book.
It's nowhere near as good to drive as an e46 M3. And a GTI is a better hot hatch.
Perhaps try an Edition 30 GTI - they're a hoot and much better to fling down a country lane than the heavy R32. Feels quicker too.
I disagree as when it comes to complete dynamics whether it be a GTI or an R32 they are not going to compare to the thrill of the OP's VX.
An R32 would no doubt be a great choice and fairly comfortable for the commute, giving the option to open the taps and give it a bit on b road blasts on occasion but knowing its going to be sure footed when the weather is crap even come summertime downpours.
Only thing I would potentially contemplate would maybe be a Seat Leon as you would get a bit more for your money.

I have very similar thinking, I had a VX and a 2.7T Audi A6 to go with it, I needed a big car hence the A6 for a cheap well under budget sleeper an old 2.7T S4 could be good, not as noticeable as an S3 or Golf but probably more go in a straight line.Pentoman said:
Some sort of 1984 yank truck with a petrol V8 is, undoubtedly, exactly what you want even if you don't know it.
If you don't want to spend on your toy then one of these IS the answer , although 9k will get a lot newer than 84 ,GMC/Chev or treat yourself to a Grand Cherokee limited/overland/srt8 , you won't regret it .the R32 is a brilliant real world car, i put 50k on mine commuting into london every day, the instant torque, lovely noise with no wheels spin no matter what the weather makes it great for traffic light GPs or any place you get a few free yards
downside is the pretty poor MPG and £500 tax disc
