Whilst out driving in my girlfriends car, I noticed an unmarked van perched on the opposite side of the road with a chap sitting in a fold up chair behind a black box (speed gun).
Question is...although there are speed camera warning signs along the road, shouldn't the van/bloke/speedgun be visible, ie, not hidden away and up to no good...the bas***d! I thought speed cameras had to be highly visible now.

The 'mobile stealth Plod vans' round here, busy enforcing a needless 30 limit, wasting police time and taxpayer's money, have big reflective stripes on the back and a sticker on the side that implies 'more speed cameras = less dead children'. Oops - in answer to your question, no, only fixed speed cameras have to be visible. Mobile ones are exempt - theones round here are only marked now because of public anger - like the van in Basildon that got stoned by youths.

I got caught by a mobile speed trap admittedly about a year or so ago now. It was a plain white escort van with a speed camera hidden in front of it.
3 points and £40 fine. The annoying thing was it was on a dual carrageway, no houses, pedestrians just grass one side and armco in the middle - but stupid 40mph speed limit.
Got the letter in the post a couple of weeks later.

Fcukers. They've just put new fixed ones on a dual carriagway near me. 50 limit. 30 limit the other but thankfully no camera that side. You should see the number of skid marks from people not seeing them early enough and then panicing. Stupid thing is they can defend the placement because there are crashes quite regularly when people get it wrong going on and off roundabouts therefore its an "accident blackspot". B@stards 
You know if you wanted to you could wander up to plod sitting in his chair next to his police van on side of road and ask him if he's on an emergency call (he won't be) You then tell him that he has to move his vehicle because police have to respect the laws like you and me unless they are on an emergency call.

Not so unfortunately. According to their propaganda leaflet, the Northants SCAMera vans has special exemption to ignore parking regulations.
Obviously parking on pavements and totally obstructing drivers' line of sight at busy junctions is a great road safety benefit.

Bloody hell , that's terrible. I say we should privatise the police force and then for 1 whole month not break the law in any way , there will be no money from fines coming in and all the pigs , oops i mean policemen will be sacked due to lack of ressources.
