Whats this for?

...agreed. If I remember rightly to the S1 I had for a while, the button to the left of it is a standard thing to switch the instrument lights on and off so they don't reflect in the windscreen in the dark, so that could be an aftermarket thing someone has fitted to make it more sophisticated and give more variety than just on and off.
It's either the Turbo Boost switch, or the control for the sweeping sequential red led's on the front of the bonnet Michael.
Or it could activate the cloaking device.
Seriously, it's an aftermarket addition, I would also concur with the instrument light dimmer switch idea.
The 'head-up display" of instruments reflecting in the windscreen at night is rather distracting, so very early on in my ownership, I made a shield/ hood/ cowl/ whatevva fitted at the top of the dash to prevent it. It's very simple but effective.
AutoAndy, the button to the left in the pic is actually the cig lighter, just above the ash tray. On the S1, the panel light on/ off switch is one of the row of four just forward of the radio aperture.
