Z4M Service History
Discussion
Hey,
Im currently on the look out for a fun two seater. I took a Z4MR out for a test drive yesterday and it seems a great car with every option under the sun. However this particular car was last serviced in 11/2011 at 25K (inspection 1). Would you be concerned by this? the car currently has 31K miles on the clock so has only done 6K in the last few years. Should it of at least had an oil service after two years? and any other advice on what to look our for on an Z4M?
Thanks

I would have liked to have seen an oil change twice since the last service!!
I used to get the oil changed annually. I think the minimum servicing requirement was every 2 years according to BMW, and brake fluid was every 2 as well.
The problem is the (fuel)mileage-based servicing indicator on the dash, so some owners follow it religously depsite common sense saying 2.5 years without a service is ridiculous.
ETA- if however it has had all servicing 'required' then I would just get the oil changed after purchase. It's only done 6k miles although its a little old.

It's 2 months overdue an oil and brake fluid change... Wouldn't bother me if the rest checked out especially as the mileage is low.
If you intend to go into BMW insured warranty ring up Mondial and confirm that the servicing outside of the manufacturers recommendations won't affect this (I think there is a months grace anyhow).
Intervals are 2 years and between 10-15k depending on how you drive it.
Get over to the z4 forum if you need any further info
ETA I don't think the indicator works on time only mileage but happy to be corrected.

It should have had another service, schedule is 18,000 miles or 2 years which ever comes first.
I've just gone through an oil service at 82k miles and owned car since 23k miles.... 5 1/2 years.... reset indicator counts down from 15.5k miles and is usage (fuel consumption driven) - typically get 12-13k of hard driving between oil/inspections. I'll update with latest oil service in my history shortly.
6k in last two years and 2months overdue for a minor service is no biggie. Get it serviced get the brake fluid changed as well.
Things to look out for on an MR with those sort of miles.
The inspection 1 was a bit earlier than most, perhaps lots of short trips or perhaps driven hard.
Check the brake discs and pads; measure the thickness if you can. There should still be some life left in them at 25k. If they are on their last legs, then the car has probably been driven hard. Plus you would need to budget around 1k to replace them front and rear, plus pads & fluid change.
Check the engine struts where they attach to the rear of the bay. They can crack.
Check the rear springs.
Run the hood up and down a check the roof motor is working. If the previous owner is available, ask if the roof drains have been cleaned out. They clog and the roof motor can fill with water and die. 2k Job, at a stealer.
Have a listen to the engine after it's warmed up on a run. It's normal to here the VANOS chattering in the background, between 2.8-3.5 krpM. Outside that range or if it's loud. Then get checked out.
That's all the bad news I can think of. In general the car is pretty bomb proof. Nothing but regular servicing and consumables on mine in three years. (Fingers crossed)
