Hi all,

Looking to get a new (to me) car, the chap is selling as he's changed jobs and he's saying: "My new company has a 4 year policy so anything older than that I need to change."

Now, the car looks good etc... Bit high on the miles given the age, but I can't say I've ever heard of a company stating what car age you must have?? Anyone heard of this? Just curious really, and to why?

He's taken the car allowance instead of a company car and his employer puts some restrictions on the type of car he can have. Not uncommon for them to say no old cars / sports cars / two door models / etc.

Very common most big companies insist on <4 years old if you take a car allowance instead if a company car

If companies give the employee a car allowance above normal slary, generally speaking they will have criteria for what car you must by with said allowance.

Lots of employers offer cash incentives to opt out of company cars, providing you have a vehicle which meets certain criteria - they're usually age based. It's partly about company image, they don't want some tight rep taking 45p a mile and turning up at clients in a 10 year old Mondeo stbox running on used chip fat and equally they don't want the same guy phoning in late every 3rd week because it's st itself on the way in.

How odd - My wife get's a car allowance through HSBC and has a 1991 Nissan Figaro...???

Surely if it's your car, you can have whatever you'd like?! *shrug* So if you rock up in a 1969 Lotus Elan they'll stop your car allowance?

OK, that starts to make sense. You take the allowance, we expect you to spend it kinda thing... Otherwise, we'll give you a car.

Ours is 6yrs, but it's not enforced.

I think it will be though - some people (oddly, especially those who get higher allowances) are running right sheds.

I think it comes down to whether the company car you are taking an allowance for is meant to be a perk or a business tool. My wife takes the allowance and they don't care about the car, but the car is just a perk.

Does she get a monthly sum, or just mileage?

Big companies (and HSBC is pretty big) more and more tend to have CO2 limits even on car allowance cars.

The Elan would fail most companies car allowance test!

Just a monthly sum... I think as said above it's just a perk as she's in Canary Wharf, hence no need for a company car, and only the clinically insane and uber rich (often hard to tell which is which) drive into London wink

They can just stop paying the allowance, the terms will be written in to the contract.

same where I work.

no older than 6 years.

'reasonable mpg' and 'reasonable CO2' (which in reality is actually anything less than 170 co2.

Also needs at least 4 or 5 doors.

previous company had stricter rules - no 4x4, convertibles or coupes and co2 less than 120. Allowance was rubbish too on the grade I was on.

one point of note is that, where a company demands certain rules, they often include full and evidenced servicing and MoT etc, so I suppose when buying from someone you know they've had to service it by the book!

If your employer is paying you a car allowance in lieu of a company car, why shouldn't they set criteria for it. Is a 1969 Lotus Elan a suitable car for taking 3 colleagues to see a client?

My previous company was ISTR also 4 years. Current company doesn't have a hard limit age (so I have a nearly 6yo and plan to swap when it hits 7yo), just has to be decent condition and no sports cars.

Doesn't affect my wife, her company doesn't set any criteria about your car if you take the allowance, but her option was to either take the cash or forfeit over a hundred quid a month and get some piece of st 1.6 diesel Mondeo foisted on her.

The pure perk (no need for a company car at all) allowances should be stamped out really - as an employee you still pay tax and NI but they don't count towards your pension etc.
