Ok, I do expect to get flamed for this but I'm interested in people's experiences with HID's in the Chims reflector headlights.

From what I read you can get a 'S' build or an 'R' bulb with the 'R' bulb designed for reflector housings to eliminate dazzle.

Looking at the prices of kits, they are so cheap I might just give it a go and if I feel they are dazzling to other drivers, I've not lost a lot of cash. Of course, it makes sense if they are plug and play to make it east to fit and reverse back.

Comments and recommended kits most welcome.

PS - I don't really like the Lupo conversion before people suggest that.

I've put these on 2 cars that had poor lighting, a Puma and an X type, the lights worked well and were a massive improvement without dazzling oncoming vehicles. That said both cars had projector lens type lights which may make a difference.

Have you tried these 80/100?
They were certainly standard on later cars, and the only ones listed on the RG site for Griffith/Chimaera.
I know there are better combinations on more modern cars, but I have never had any problems seeing at night with these and the standard reflectors and lenses.

A mate who has a 1999/2000 Chimaera got his HID kit from these guys;
www.hidcity.co.uk

Pretty easy to fit apparently, and the difference in light output is staggering. He had new reflector bowls a couple of years ago, so lights really are at peak performance. The car has been through 2 MOTs since fitment and no issues either.

Mine have been thrown in the bin (from my Griff). Bright to be sure, but beam pattern was directed in everyone else's eyes.... constantly being flashed so got bored and replaced them with normal lights and an additional wire to help with the current draw. (I say me, it was the guys doing my rebuild and retrim.... should have the car on friday.... can't wait!!!)

The 7 inch H4 headlamps do not lend themselves to a good HID Conversion IMVHO.

The H4 HID uses a shroud to change from dip to main beam and back - this is one weakness, the other is accuracy and they therefore produce a v poor, but extremely bright flood of light - this is what most others on the roads really hate!!!

It's a free world, but since you asked, I would recommend the latest H4 filament bulbs, Phillips Xtreme etc. They have come quite a way from bog standard H4 halogen these days.

So, not flamed, but please don't join the bling-blue-god-thats-dazzling Euroboxes that are a bleeding pain in the eyes....AIMVHO

P.S. Well done your man Simon (Mr Leerdam23)

Have you checked the actual voltage on full beam at the back of the bulbs? It only takes a volt drop or two to loose a lot of light output. If you take a decent feed wire directly from the back of the alternator (and earth) with local switching relays near the bulbs you can get nearly 14 volts. Halogens work very well with a decent supply and you dont p*ss off other road users.

Has anyone fitted them to the lupo lights, or do they run to hot for the plastic lens. I know they do a lupo xenon light but was unsure if that was a projector type?.

HIDs are rated at 35 w or 55w (only recently available).

Just about all Cars are fiited with Polycarbonate plastic headlamps, so it should not be an issue.

Like K4TRV, I fitted better (in my case Osram Night Breaker) H4 bulbs for about 12 quid and can now see where I am going despite corroded reflectors.
Do at least try some better bulbs first - they are so cheap it's a no brainer. I think Osram now do an improved one, Nightbreaker Unlimited, for about £25 a set.
Takes about 15 minutes to fit if yours is a later car with the access panels behind the headlights

That is a very good point. I'll check this first.

Thanks.

did the conversion on my MK1. was quite a pita to remove and fit as there was no service hole in the inner wheel arches. made the cut and closed it with an alloy plate. not compareable to the standard bulbs. had some beams fitted in the front grille for some night hoonin.... light level now is superb.

They are not road legal in any shape or form unless the origional reflector is designed for them. Its just a matter of what you can get away with.
