Vauxhall Astra VXR Extreme first look

It isn't subtle, that's for sure!

Despite being a vastly improved car over its predecessor, the Vauxhall Astra VXR has been struggling somewhat against its hot hatch contemporaries. Not as rewarding as a Megane 265, not as affordable as a Focus ST and not as desirable as a Golf GTI, the VXR was in danger of being overlooked.

"Not on our watch" is the apparent response from Vauxhall with the Astra VXR Extreme. This being a concept from Vauxhall's performance brand, it isn't shy by any stretch. There's only one image so far but it reveals four ruddy great exhaust pipes, a spoiler that towers over the rear screen and enough visual aggression to make the standard car look a almost diffident.

The Extreme has been derived from the Astra Cup racer and is pitched as the 'street-legal race sibling' to the regular VXR. The Cup car makes 300hp and 295lb ft, the same amount of torque but 20hp more than the VXR; we'd expect the Extreme to match that output.

According to Vauxhall there is 'liberal use of high-quality carbon components'; those unique wheels appear to have the familiar weave, as does a lot of the bodykit. It's been suggested that bigger panels such the doors and the bonnet could be carbon too.

2014 marks the tenth anniversary of VXR and a production version of the Extreme would surely be the most appropriate way to celebrate. Loud in every sense and very fast with it, what better way to mark a decade of VXR? We should find out more at Geneva.

Ditch the spoiler and stickers and that's a fine looking car.

Still wouldn't buy one though.

As opposed to your car which looks like a cardboard box with holes cut out for windows? wink

Come on it doesn't look that bad (neither does yours).

I quite like it actually...for an amorphic blob of an Astra!

And, they have got to be some of the best monobloc OE wheels for a long time smile

I saw a normal VXR the other day (they must be right, as i think i've only seen 2 on the road) and i actually think it is a very handsome looking car. It's menacing, without being too aggressive, and the wheels looked massive - are they 20"?!

I don't think i could ever buy a Ford or Vauxhall (must watch too much of Clarkson), but i certainly wouldn't accuse an Astra VXR owner of making a poor decision.

I thought this, and have resisted where Ford is concerned, but I have a VX220 now and........ it rattles just like you'd expect a Vauxhall to!

4 bloody exhaust pipes!!!!!!!!

Does each cylinder of a 2 lt engine really need its own 3in exhaust pipe, of course it doesnt, is this a pimped max-power effort, nope it is attempting to be a performance car, sort it out Vauxhall!

The EU should make a useful law (for once) to stop over-exhausting cars!

I think the new VXR looks amazing but as people have already said they seem to be quite a rare sight, no idea why though

Seems to be the trend these days new Golf R, Audi S3, Pug RCZ. I really like quad pipes but they have to be the right size and style for the car

Looks great to me, if they reduce weight and make it more racecar for the road set up I'll be impressed.

The wheels look stunning.

The previous owner removed all the rear badges but the griffin sits proudly at the front!

It's probably only two with a trim on the end of each one to give the impression of four.

I don't know why Vauxhall owners do that, it's not fooling anyone. Any how, the normal VXR is a really good looking car, I'm not sure this is quite there. I'm sure it could change yet from the the artwork, but it looks a little bit try-hard at the moment.

As delightfully mental looking as a hot hatch should be. I want one.

Yeah who needs 4 pipes!

While we're at it, who needs 4 wheels, 3 would work perfectly well.
