Heater hose bypass and air flow meter questions?
Discussion
Hi all, I've started taking the Wedge apart to see what condition it is in and what will need replacing. First job was to remove the hoses and see which are getting tired and flush the orneg sludge from the system. Looking at the heater hoses, just before they disappear through the bulk head, there is a bypass hose installed. Is this correct? I would have thought that the hot water would short cut through the bypass rather than the heater matrix? Also on the photo you'll see a metal tube. I was told that this is to help with the lack of lead in the fuel. Is this a gimmick or does it actually help?

One more thing I noted is the air flow meter with a very prominent 20AM stamped on it. Checking through previous posts this does not appear to be a standard AFM. Is this correct? The engine certainly seemed to go okay so it works fine but was it a standard fitting to later cars? Will this unit give a bit more power than standard? I'm getting a little concerned that my "standard" car is not quite as standard as others! Thanks.

Hi Mate...Are you sure the AFM say's 20AM and not 2AM..2AM being the right one...Some people fit jag AFM's but the plenum has to be either modified or changed for one with a bigger opening.
Check on the top of the black plastic cover and there should be a long number starting with 020 280 ......
Not sure about lack of lead?..The V8 has hardened valve seats so the unleaded fuel was a blessing really..98RON+ is good..The timing ideally is set to around 6 degrees instead of 8, Some are as low as 4 degrees.
As for the plumbing...Well there seems to be a big variation in the way they are laid out..Although not sure about a by-pass hose?...
A Wedge is original to itself....

Regarding the water pipes there may have been a remote diverter valve operated via the heater controls in the car, perhaps it packed up so was removed, I don't know the earlier history of my car but I don't have a valve or a bypass, they just go straight to the matrix unhindered and to be honest its not a problem, infact its a little extra cooling capacity, if I want the warmth I turn the blower on.

It's not a Jag one, the Jag version has mounting holes in the top as well as the side. Looks like a standard SD1/ Rangey/ 350i type to me.Check on the top of the black plastic cover and there should be a long number starting with 020 280 ......

Hi all, remind me to use my glasses when I'm down in the garge. AFM does say 2AM and not 20AM. Cheers.
Also when you are on the forum...
I thought it would be 2AM, The number on the top of the black top is the actual part number...Okay its not 020 280. . . . . . as i thought...Maybe i need glasses also...
