I might have arranged a swap - my toyota celica for this:-

Looks nice!

I know nowt about these though and just wondered what the PH collective thought about them.

Yay or Nay?

Anything I should be wary of or be looking at specifically on one of these?

Just normal things:

Check HPI record and VIN numbers etc.
Service history inc. large scheduled maintenance - plugs & belts etc.
Pannel gaps
Mileage check via the VOSA MOT history and service history

Yep pretty solid motors, things to look for, wet front passenger carpet due to incorrectly fitted pollen filter, oil needs changing religeously every 10k, cambelt and water pump every 5 years or 75k, whichever comes first. Coil packs can play up but itll run like a pig if theyre shagged. Door seal can also be dodgy also causing wet carpets. Most will have been remapped, had dodgy DV's fitted, OEM brembo disks and pads will make you cry, nearly £500 fitted at a dealer.

Thermostats are prone to failure, as I discovered after buying mine!

Streets ahead of the equivalent golf gti.. corner very well and still look nice. Remapped they feel unusually quick for the power. Good all round car and one of the best I've had.
Brembos as said are expensive to replace and if I'm honest arent the most inspiring (felt like more of a marketing exercise to me)

Nice one, mostly positive then.

RE the brakes - I assume they are no harder to DIY than any other disc/pad combo which I can do myself? We also have a large independant VW/Audi centre just down the road so assuming they are not utter criminals it can go there for anything I can't do myself.

In my top 5 best looking hot hatches of all time. Would love one of these at some point. My Ibiza didn't inspire confidence in the brand reliability wise though

So much fun and ultimately very cheap to run for how much power you can get out of it.

Had a stage 2 remap done. Filthy quick.

Had mine for nearly 12 years now (from new). Great fun to drive & I think they still look good.

Things to look out for:

Failing clutch slave cylinders (should have been fixed under warranty years ago, might have been sorted before '04 anyway). Symptoms start with the pedal sticking down, quickly followed by the clutch fluid dumping on the floor.
Leaking seals on the doors, where the inner panel bolts to the door. There is (was) a foam strip sealing it, that allows water past & into the car. Easily fixed with silcon or the correct seal that VAG sell. Drying out a car that has had a leak for a while is a pita though.
Leaking pollen filters when some goon doesn't refit it properly.
Failng coil packs, should have been fixed by now as there was an FOC replacement on these.
Faulty radiator fans. If the fan (s) cycle on/off full speed with a cold engine & the aircon switched on, the fan has a blown internal resistor - which should let it run at a slow speed for the aircon. There is a cheap fix to wire in external resistors instead of buying new fans.
Power steering hoses can leak where the banjo fittings for the rack are swaged onto the ends.
Water pumps have a plastic impellor that fails. shoud have been replaced with a metal one when the cambelt was changed (which is a pain to do as the access is very tight).
Front brake calipers can corrode & cause binding. There is a stainless shim that's attached to the caliper, contacting the top & bottom edges of the pad. The Alloy caliper can corrode underneath this shim, forcing it away from the caliper & stopping the pads sliding.

Enjoy!

I used to have a Griff at the same time as my leon & there are plenty of roads where that boast would have been true!

1.8 VAG turbo is a very dull engine though. Looked at any Type-R Hondas?

Nah, going from a lift engine and I want some lazy grunt.

I also want/need 4 doors.

Just a case of sorting out an arrangement with the chap and doing the deal, watch this space!

The last thing i'd call an LCR even when standard is dull, and with a good remap they're positively mental, I guess youre just peddling common internet myth.

Don't rely on PH to feed you much more than internet myth when it comes to VAG products, the vast majority of reviews from various sources all praise the LCR and many rank it well ahead of the Golf GTI.

The LCR is an impressive bit of kit for the money, a lot of the best bits from Audi TT./S3, and chassis/suspension set up which is far more aggressive than a Octavia/golf/a3 (not S3)

Quite a few of my friends have owned them in the past and several still do, for the money there aren't too many cars which can balance the performance/running costs/practicality in the same way.

I've had mine for 2 years and I love it. Its a great A road cruiser with plenty of torque. It can be fun in the twisties but doesn't really like quick changes of direction. As long as you accept its carrying around a fair bit of weight you won't be disappointed. The upside of that is decent build quality and plenty of kit. I've had some great drives in it and I still look forward to getting in it every morning. Third gear boost is awesome! It likes to get through front tyres (I use vredestein sessantas - highly recommended) and mine seems to need the drop links replaced quite regularly.

I think they are a family car performance bargain especially at current prices and are often overlooked due to the bad rep the mark IV had. I've had both and they are worlds apart. The R's seem to be quite rare too, at least where I live!

Yours also has the rare and expensive Recaros. Enjoy :-)
