I've got an issue on my 5 year old XK where on the bluetooth the 3rd party can't hear me very well but I can hear them fine.

There is a very clear service bulletin to fix this which wasn't done in the first 3 years as I assume no one really used the bluetooth.

Cause: This is a combination of microphone positioning and noise cancellation/signal processing within the phone system
software.

Action: Should a customer express concern, install a new external microphone and depending on VIN, re-configure the Bluetooth
Telephone Module using Integrated Diagnostic System (IDS). Follow the Service Instruction outlined below.
Parts Required

The cost to fix it is £250.

Isn't this essentially the manufacturer admitting what they did originally doesn't work and is crap? Why am I paying to fix their crap work?

I would think that if the car was still under warranty, it would be covered but as the warranty has expired the cost falls to you.

Indeed. The way I see it is they cocked it up on manufacturing. Appears to be a common issue and common enough for there to be a clear TSB on it.

All manufacturers to this, quite sucky imo. If I made something and it was wrong and a few years later someone came to me and said this doesn't work properly and I knew I had it made it incorrectly. I'd just fix it.

It sounds more like a software issue rather than a mic issue tbh.

Surely all car repairs only become necessary because it wasn't built better in the first place???

Can't see anything special to complain about here.

No its definately a mic issue, common problem shared with the XJ X350 models of the same era. The mic was originally sat behind a grille in the overhead central panel, but voice quality was rubbish. In later models they fitted a separate external mic fixed to the right side of the overhead console. My old XJ had the internal crap mic , my later one has the external one which works very well.

It depends on whether the system worked when the vehicle was first made. If it did, then it appears to be down to a change in the Bluetooth specification, which is not 100% backwards compatible. For example, my Nokia 5230 wouldn't pair with my '07 335d, yet my antique Motorola one did. Now, with my '10 335d the Nokia pairs perfectly.

It sounds to me as if your phone is running a recent Bluetooth version that isn't 100% compatible with the system in your car, in which case it's up to you to sort it out, not Jaguar.

Going off forums plenty of people have complained and had it fixed under warranty. This TSB is also the 4th version which came out in 2007. The car was out in 2006 I believe.

Have you tried this approach?

Your beef is with the first owner really. It was a substandard job in the first place, but no business can risk being exposed to liabilities like this forever so they make it quite clear that you need to complain within the warranty period. If it's anything safety related, it'll be a recall.

It is annoying, I admit to get a used car with a niggle which would have been free to sort out if the last muppet who owned it had bothered to do something about it. I can understand why the OEMs have to draw the line somewhere though.

A TSB is issued for something that MAY need a fix, but does not warrant a recall.

There is no warranty?

Yeah, I'll probably just get the kit and fit it myself and then code it.

Could the OPs car potentially have been leased for the first 3 years of its life?

If it had been serviced at independent garages (as some lease cars are) rather than the Jaguar main dealer then presumably this is how it got missed?

About 15 years I bought one of the company cars at a place I used to work at. It was 3 years old & had just ended its lease - the lease company offered it to work at a very good price as it was 3 years old with 90k on. I bought it & a couple of months later took it to a BMW dealer for a service. It had never been in a BMW dealer in all its 3 years & there were loads of outstanding things - one of which was a new steering column!

Luckily they did them for free which was excellent customer service.

Or the person who had it didn't use the functionality, so never reported it.
