Anyone used one of these? If so please let me know what you thought, pros/cons etc.

The vertical section extends from about 12-18".

Or do you think it will be simply too heavy and cumbersome, and prefer a normal £5 folding jobbie?

Simpo, not used the flash bracket, but do have some other Manfrotto gear.

Pros
1. Incredibly flexible system, you can get parts to do almost anything and it all fits together - Lego for men

2. Well made and will stand the test of time

Cons
1. Some bits are kidney donatingly expensive

Overall really good gear and if you're of the mindset "Buy it once, buy it right" then it's very good stuff indeed. I expect to be using mine for many years to come.

Ordered it today Luckily I spotted that you need a £6 'flash foot' as well.

I wonder how much 'Lego' I will have in 10 year's time?

It's been a good week for toys

I have found manfrotto stuff to be built like a tank, and really easy to repair IF stuff does ever break.

On the negative side their stuff (particularly heavy duty camera tripods) are damned heavy!

Are you going to use this with your D70, if so what hot shoe adapter are you using?

I've heard back from Nikon that the SC-17 is the one:

The SC-17 is the cable you require. The flash end has a standard tripod mount on the bottom. www.europe-nikon.com/details.aspx?countryId=20&languageId=22&prodId=368&catId=101

Actually cancel that - the SC-17 is being replaced by the SC-28 and 29. The latter has an additional AF assist light (like the camera's but more powerful I think) so you can focus better in low light and long range. However it doesn't seem to be on Nikon's website yet!
