I've heard this is a) common and b) incurable. Most noticable on country roads where all 4 wheels are bouncing around independantly (rather than, say, going over a speed hump)
Possibility is anti-rollbar bushes butjust wondered if anyone else had experienced/solved this.

Y'know, there are nothing like amateur mechanics for the creation of myth and legend!!
If you have a knocking noise from your car on rough surfaces, it's because two mechanical components are managing to touch one another; they're not supposed to do that; it is most definitely NOT incurable!
If it's done a high mileage it is most probably one or more of the following:-
Torn or dislodged exhaust hangers allowing the system to touch the bodyshell or suspension somewhere.
Strut top mountings on the front suspension.
Lower ball joints on the front suspension.
Anti-roll bar bushes or drop links.
Track rod ends.
You need to have it thouroughly checked by someone who knows VWs and won't miss anything.
When it's right the MK 4 Golf has got great ride quality and should be silent over the bumps.
