Which barge for euro trip (to sell on straight after)?

Planning a road trip to Slovenia, Italy, Austria, etc in August, and I've bedazzled SWMBO with just enough man-maths that she agrees it's a good idea buy an old barge just for the trip (to save on flights, car hire, etc). And we get to fill it up with good food, wine, etc for the return trip.
So the car must seat 4 adults (we collect some friends in Bavaria), be properly comfortable for long cruising, have excellent climate/cruise/etc equipment. A bit of dedent grunt is a plus. But it must not a be a huge reliability gamble (I'd never live it down).
So far, the obvious answer is a Lexus LS, but the bit that I'm struggling with is that whatever I get MUST be fairly easy to sell on afterwards. And I don't think the LS is, nor the Honda Legend.
Budget is up to £5k, but it would be good to do it for £2-3k. Ideas?

I'd go diesel as the cost savings on the continent are considerable.

How much are flights and hire car going to cost you?
How many days out of your holiday as you going to spend doing1,500 miles then how many to recover at either end?
I've looked at this before with skiing and binned the idea instead opted for business class flights and taxi tfrhire car to thee end. Unless you buy a £500-1k car and nothing goes wrong then you might make it cheaper but its a holiday
To ow £5k and you might lose a chunk might not v flights £500 each business class £1k MAX then £250 for a weeks hire or even two weeks if you get a deal hassle and worry free if a say its a lovely pipe dream but if your going to do that sort of thing you want a lovely sports car to go over the mountains etc or a classic car none of which are cheap.

Part of the holiday is in the travel? I have done a few of these type of trips, France, Spain, Italy, Switzerland. Love it - though to be fair I have not bought a car specifically for it. I would suggest if it is not shed money, then buy diesel as the market for barge petrol is small and you might lose a packet/end up stuck with your barge.
