I am beginning to look for a pre-owned XK. I can find gently used 2009 models near here with the 4.2. Is paying a bit more for a 2010 with the 5.0 worth it? I also understand that the interior materials are a step up on the 2010s compared to previous years. Anyone have any opinions?

Yep, the 5.0 is the one to go for for the reasons you say.

Thanks. I will of course take a ride in both but I suspect I will agree with you.

Be sure to get the XK Portfolio or the XKR - these have everything as standard. Aside that is from Aero, Speed or Black Packs.

Thanks, the Portfolio sounds to be the answer. Less expensive that specclng a base out.

I have the XKR but to be honest I think the XK Portfolio is the pick of the bunch. All the toys included and more than enough power for any GT car. It's astonishing value on the used market.

I agree. I can find a 2010 one here for around $35-36K with low to medium mileage.

I went from a very high spec'06 XK 4.2 to an early '09 5.0 Portfolio last year. The 5.0 is noticeably quicker, beautifully detailed inside and everything from the audio to the adaptive cruise control works just that little bit better than it did on the old car. Only downsides are the rather jowly look to the front bumper, the 20 inch wheels which spoil the ride, and it's slightly thirstier, despite what the official figures say. Well worth seeking out over a base model or 4.2.

That is what I was wanting to hear, thanks. It looks like the 5.0 is the way to go.

I drove a 5L XKR a month or so back with 20" wheels and was pleasantly surprised at how well it rode. I've not tried the smaller wheels, I'd been expecting to find the big ones with rubber bands around them to be harsh but it was really good. I felt it mostly rode better than Lady B8's E Class estate which is a Elegance rather than the normal Sport which we found to be really harsh.

I would drive both and decide based on that.

I have had both 4.2 and 5L XKR Convertibles and consider ride on 20 inch wheels to be very good-Jaguar always seem to get balance between ride and handling spot on-no one expects a car with performance of 5L XKR to be soft and wallowy-try a Porsche with similar performance or BMW-When I had XF with 20 inch wheels I would get loan car for servicing normally base XF on 18" wheels and did not think ride was much better but handling definately not as good or steering as precise
