Hey guys...OK, I know this is impossible to diagnose on here but looking for some ideas.

I do really need to take it out for a clear out drive but its not taxed and I'm doing other jobs at the moment.

Started it up to let it run and it starts easily but smells rich and needs a little throttle to clear it out before it will idle.

It runs OK and on 8 but if you rev it at all it stutters slightly, as in hesitates slightly before quickly revving. What's most odd is it backfires loudly, a real SNAP type backfire.

I've put new leads on a one had broken down and was arcing on the block.

Took the plugs out and they are all very sooty.

Checked compression and I have between 162 and 168 so plenty.

I did have a leaky top cap and got coolant on the sensors..could this be related?

Also, what pressure should the fuel be set to?

Fuel pressure should be in the range of 38psi if memory serves me right.

Is the ECU plug snug? Try unplugging and re-plugging and try again.

Assume its a flapper?? Do the easy stuff first, change the plugs or at the very minimum clean them up and check gaps. You will have a fixed FPR so asume the pressure is ok, if not check the pump and filters. Have a look at th connectors on the fuel pump pull off rough up and clean and replace. Check and re-make the earth connection on the pump. Take off and clean up all the sensor connectors on the top of the engine especially if its all been wet? Check the dizzy bullet connector under the AFM or plenum depending on the layout of the car. Finally look at the dizzy cap and internals and clean / dry. If you have had shorts to the engine block then look at the dizzy amp and check for a fat blue spark at the plugs. If all is done and still playing up let us know for more information

Its a flapper...

I checked the fuel pressure and its 38 psi (I think, wrote it down but haven't got it to hand)

I changed all connection on pump so I believe that's OK.

I'm going to put a new set of plugs in and go for some moroso leads as they look good wink

I'm going to check timing again, and clean all connection on the senders and see what I have.

Engine temperature sensor.

I am guessing you took the look off completely from the engine so you might have mixed up the two plugs the other one being the thermotime switch next to it.

Well, all seems to be good now!

I took the sensors off and the temp sensor was plastic topped (I changed few years ago) and got mashed during removal!

Got a new one and fitted it.

Ran it up and still not right so I thought bugger it, even though its just rained I'm going to take it round the block to warm up properly as my neighbours are being very patient and I don't want that to change!

Ran like crud until about 5 mins into the journey when I let the revs gently climb to about 4k and it cleared itself! 25 mins later, all going well and I'm loving the new zorst! Bring on the sunshine!!!!
