So BMW have now launched a 4 door version of the 4 Series.

But that's the 3 Series I hear you cry?

Apparently not - 4 Series Grand Coupe

The equivalent 3 Series

Opinions? Worthy niche filler or cynical money maker?

Not really any different than the 6-series GC is it? I dare say some people will consider it worth the extra money.

I struggle the see the point of a lot of cars these days. Like the Golf & Golf Plus, then whatever comes next, The Jetta? they are all the same size etc, how do you pick between them?

Errrrm, aren't they in business to sell cars?

Mind you, I still laugh every time I see a Mini Countryman or Fiat 500C towering over the other traffic!

So there is no 3 series coupe, you have to have a 4 series, but if you opt for a 4 series you can have 4 doors, but you don't want one of those because you wanted the 2 door 3 series that doesn't exist.

Is it a slightly posher/ more exclusive 3 series, or is it the same as a 3 series but with a different roof line and a smaller boot?

And has anybody bought an A5 4 door? Don't recall seeing one ever.

Some of these niche cars make sense but these two look so similar, the differences are imperceptibly small to me, I'm not sure what the point is.

There isn't one, unless you mean the hatchback?

So that's an A4 then? There's loads. If you mean the A5 sportback which is 5 door, then yes, there's loads of those too. Which probably makes BMW think they can sell a few of these in that niche section of the market.

I actually like this 4 series GC. Loses the hideous front end of the new 3 series, which is a plus.

I see loads of the 5 door a5.

I did read that BMW were really struggling to sell the 6 series 2 door now the GC was out, as everyone goes for them instead.

I seem to have completely missed them unveiling this. Looks good though! I think it possibly overlaps a bit with the 3-Series GT rather than the traditional saloon.

Hopefully they'll do a 2-series Grand Coupe also as BMW are missing a rival to the new Audi A3 saloon and Mercedes CLA.

Yes, me too. Probably as many as two-door ones, in fact.

Niches within niches within niches - so long as they can share the same hardware as everything else, which means you can have a four door coupe off-roader with a six cylinder petrol engine, but if you bemoan the lack of light, raw sportscars you're told there's no market for them.

Like it very much, better proportioned than the 3er overall and not as awkward as the 3 Gran Turismo either. Looks better than the 4er coupé to my eyes too.

Now, will we see an ///M derivative? Failing that, the 435d GC M Sport just went to the top of the most desirable all rounder current BMW for me.

Unless ALPINA make a D4 version...

Irrespective of how many similar models they produce, it looks nice

I own an F30 328i and it certainly looks very similar to me

Either way, more choice for the customer can't be a bad thing

Getting a tad like the Austin/Morris 1100 & 1300 isn't it? hehe

Then they'll throw in the MG version, and call it an M4 ( or M3 ). And then comes the Wolseley version with a softer ride (not!).

FFS!!
